My Fellow Prisoners, by Mikhail Khodorkovsky

In this eye-opening account, Russia’s most famous political prisoner bears witness to his country’s brutal prison system

Mikhail Khodorkovsky was Russia’s leading businessman and an outspoken Kremlin critic. Under his leadership, the oil company Yukos revived the Russian oil industry, and as the company thrived, he began sponsoring programs to encourage civil society and fight corruption.

When he was arrested at gunpoint in 2003, Khodorkovsky became Russia’s most famous political prisoner. Sentenced to ten years in a Siberian penal colony on fraud and tax evasion charges, he was put on trial again in 2010 and sentenced to fourteen years, despite the fact that the new charges contradicted the earlier ones.

While imprisoned, Khodorkovsky fought for the rights of his fellow prisoners, going on hunger strike four times. After he was pardoned in 2013, he vowed to continue fighting for prisoners’ rights, and My Fellow Prisoners is a tribute to that work. A moving portrait of the prisoners Khodorkovsky met, My Fellow Prisoners tells the story of lives destroyed by bureaucratic criminality. It is a passionate call to recognize a human tragedy.

Review
"My Fellow Prisoners is an illuminating and brave piece of work" —The Washington Post

"This little book’s power is inversely proportional to its size." —Russian Life

About the Author
Mikhail Khodorkovsky is Russia’s best-known political prisoner. Prior to his arrest on October 25, 2003, Khodorkovsky had been known as one of Russia’s most successful entrepreneurs and as a pioneering philanthropist. He led the fight against corruption in Russia, encouraged inward investment and promoted civil society. Pardoned in December 2013, he lives in Switzerland and works on behalf of prisoners’ rights.

Power inversely proportional to its size
By Paul E. Richardson
It is noteworthy that Mikhail Khodorkovsky, recently amnestied and exiled abroad after his long prison term in Siberia, chose as his first western publication not a long, political tract, but a diminutive sketchbook.

But do not be deceived. This little book's power is inversely proportional to its size.

Chekhovian in its brevity (81 pages), it is a compilation of perceptive, respectful portraits of people whom Khodorkovsky met in prison, people whose principles set them apart - for good or ill. And since the greatest and worst aspects of human character are expressed in times of profound difficulty, the book offers a grim, hazy reflection of Russian society more generally (and much of humanity) - its apathy and despair, its courage and character.

But the author does not belabor this point, and one is only drawn to that equation by his harmless, almost technocratic questions at the end of each disturbing story, such as, "What sort of people are we, if we allow such a thing?"

As reviewed in Russian Life magazine (Mar/Apr 2015).

First hand experience on Russian prisons
By Mikko Juhani Kaarela
The author has gathered ten years of personal experience on the Russian prison system. He gives excellent insight on how the judicial system and the entire Russian society works. Definitely worth reading.

I loved this book
By Jan Stubbs
Enter the bizarro world of Russian prison life, where the accuser is just as likely to be punished as the accused. I loved this book, was sorry that it was only 80 pages which I finished in one sitting. It is a bunch of Khafka-esque short stories about the different characters he met in prison. I was disappointed that he did not discuss his case at all, but maybe there will be another book about that. Very well written, I assumed it was written in Russian and then translated?
