Neural Control Engineering: The Emerging Intersection between Control Theory and Neuroscience (Computational Neuroscience Series), by Stev

Over the past sixty years, powerful methods of model-based control engineering have been responsible for such dramatic advances in engineering systems as autolanding aircraft, autonomous vehicles, and even weather forecasting. Over those same decades, our models of the nervous system have evolved from single-cell membranes to neuronal networks to large-scale models of the human brain. Yet until recently control theory was completely inapplicable to the types of nonlinear models being developed in neuroscience. The revolution in nonlinear control engineering in the late 1990s has made the intersection of control theory and neuroscience possible. In Neural Control Engineering, Steven Schiff seeks to bridge the two fields, examining the application of new methods in nonlinear control engineering to neuroscience. After presenting extensive material on formulating computational neuroscience models in a control environment -- including some fundamentals of the algorithms helpful in crossing the divide from intuition to effective application -- Schiff examines a range of applications, including brain-machine interfaces and neural stimulation. He reports on research that he and his colleagues have undertaken showing that nonlinear control theory methods can be applied to models of single cells, small neuronal networks, and large-scale networks in disease states of Parkinson's disease and epilepsy. With Neural Control Engineering the reader acquires a working knowledge of the fundamentals of control theory and computational neuroscience sufficient not only to understand the literature in this trandisciplinary area but also to begin working to advance the field. The book will serve as an essential guide for scientists in either biology or engineering and for physicians who wish to gain expertise in these areas.

Review

For many years, Steve Schiff's pioneering work has led the way toward a deeper understanding of the brain as a dynamical system. In this beautifully written and groundbreaking book, he presents a new synthesis of neuroscience, computation, and engineering. Neural Control Engineering will be a welcome resource for all working in this emerging field, and it will guide and inspire the next generation of students. -- Olaf Sporns, Provost Professor, Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences, Indiana University, author of Networks of the Brain

Predicting and Controlling Brain Activity
By Jack Cowan
Niels Bohr has been quoted as saying "the hardest thing to do in science is to predict, especially the future!" This book is concerned, in large part, with this problem, in its application to controlling the dynamics of the brain. The problem involves collecting observations of brain activity, filtering out the effects of noise and measurement errors, and controlling brain dynamics. In many ways this set of problems originated in Gauss's least squares method of minimizing the effects of measurement errors, which is over 200 years old. But it was during the period between World Wars 1 and 2, that the current methods for dealing with noisy data in the exercise of predictive control were really started by Norbert Wiener, and by Andrey Kolmogorov in 1941. Wiener's theory considered data in the form of continuously changing data represented by stationary random processes with Gaussian statistics, and Kolmogorov studied very similar processes generated by data sampled at discrete times. Essentially Wiener and Kolmogorov developed filters to remove the effects of noise and measurement errors from the data, so the theory is often called the Wiener-Kolmogorov filtering theory.

The problem with both theories was that they dealt only with linear, stationary and Gaussian processes. It took another 20 years before Rudy Kálmán (1960) introduced a filter theory to deal with noisy dynamical systems, and another 40 years or so before the Kalman filter techniques were used to estimate the parameters of dynamics generated by various equations describing neural activity. Schiff's book is the first comprehensive account of this development. Schiff is perhaps uniquely qualified to write this account. He is both a practicing neurosurgeon and computational neuroscientist, and a pioneer in the application of control techniques to problems such as chaos control.

The early chapters provide a brisk introduction to least squares minimization and its connection with Bayes Rule, and thence to iterative methods for data assimilation, i.e., the processes that incorporate measurements into various models of neural activity, in particular to the Kalman filter approach for discrete data, and the Kalman-Bucy filter (1961) for continuous data. The first neural examples considered are the Hodgkin-Huxley equations (1952) that model the ionic current flows that trigger current pulses in neurons, and various simplified models such as the Fitzhugh-Nagumo equations (1961). Schiff shows that such simplified models often lead to effective controls of neuronal activity. In keeping with this, the next chapter deals with a population model of large-scale neural activity, the Wilson-Cowan equations (1972, 1973). These are essentially a spatio-temporal extension of Fitzhugh-Nagumo like equations, and Schiff shows how a Kalman filter approach can again be used in an efficient way to control their dynamics. The final two chapters of this sequence deal with the construction of ab initio models and filters based directly on data assimilation, and with the inadequacies of all such models. Chapter 7, the first of these two chapters, studies the utility of such techniques as Principal Components Analysis, and Singular Value Decomposition and other techniques, as ways of abstracting from data sets, a set of uncorrelated linear combinations of parts of the data set, that carry the essential information in the set. The first few such components can then be used in a Kalman filter approach. Examples are described of applications to Image Analysis, both static and dynamic, and to the analysis of Spatiotemporal Brain Activity.

The final chapters, 9 through13 are perhaps the most interesting. Chapter 9 covers such topics as Apostolos Georgopoulos' discoveries in 1982-1986, that the direction of a limb movement is uniquely predicted by the activity of a (small) population of neurons in the monkey motor cortex. Essentially each neuron in the population is tuned to respond maximally for a preferred direction of limb movement, and the vector sum of the population activity drives the intended movement. [There is a corresponding effect in the visual cortex: the vector sum of the population activity of a (small) population of neurons in the visual cortex accurately represents the local orientation of the edge of an object in the visual field, as was demonstrated by David Hubel and Torsten Wiesel in 1959-1974.]
These findings were seminal for the development of brain-machine interfaces in the form, for example, of implanted arrays of microelectrodes. The resulting deluge of data required much assimilation via Kalman filters. Chapter 10 provides a very interesting introduction to Parkinson's Disease, and the models thereof developed by David Terman and colleagues (2002-2004). These models are simplified Hodgkin-Huxley-like models, and provide a first attempt to model Parkinson's Disease and to provide insight into the efficacy or otherwise of deep brain stimulation. Chapters 11-12 provide a brief look at the use of electric fields to stimulate the brain, and at recent attempts to understand and control Epileptic Seizures. The final chapter, 13, is more speculative, but raises the possibility that brain themselves implement Kalman filters.

In summary, I found this book extremely interesting and well written. I have only some minor caveats. There is almost nothing about Wiener-Kolmogorov filters. In Chapter 11 the method of reducing the resistive tree structure of a neural dendrite to an equivalent cylinder is introduced with no citation of Wilfrid Rall's introduction of this method (based on impedance matching) in 1957-1960. Apart from these, this book is a gold mine for anyone interested in how to model brain activity, and how to control it.

Interdisciplinary Gem
By Thomas S
In terms of what this book is about, I have not much to say beyond what a previous reviewer said. What I want to emphasize is the extraordinary fact that all these chapters are offered by the same author. He has obviously spent many years of his life to learn and practise enough engineering, mathematics, statistics, physics, philosophy - beyond his primary profession as a neurosurgeon trained in physiology - to meaningfully bring together what is needed to advance his field beyond this point.

Why should you read this book - beyond admiring the last polymath?

Case 1: You plan to attend Prof. Schiff's Course - well then it's obvious

Case 2: You plan to teach a course in a related field - then you can take this text as a blueprint for your preparation

Case 3: You plan to do work in neural control engineering - then you will find your learning agenda set in this book. You will probably master one or two of the branches covered, but you need to develop some intuition on the others as well

Case 4: You are just curious what is going on in this area - that's how I came to read it. Then you will understand what it is like to go beyond trial-and-error in a field where full understanding of the inner workings of the system is way out of reach.

The book is a very entertaining demonstration that intuition is of utmost importance in interdisciplinary work - and that intuition comes as the result of hard work.

What I personally enjoyed is that where other authors offer bold statements and hyperbole, Steven Schiff shows courage and hope. That is a major difference.

Hope and courage is needed in particular for the last chapter "Assimilating Minds". The author is well aware that anything achieved so far in neural control engineering looks like mere stamp collecting if you had set out to understand the mind - as many did. But why not take the finest stamps from distant countries as inspiration and encouragement to eventually go to these places yourself!

The volume is staged as a serious text in a specialized field. So color illustrations are offered not for glamour but where it helps to understand a figure. For a high quality hardcover edition of a cutting edge text, I find the book reasonably priced.

I can give my full recommendation.

A Research Monograph on Neuronal Models and Related Filtering Problems
By Luigi Fatori
This is a very nice interdisciplinary book. It deals with neuronal models and a number of issues related to filtering and model uncertainty. This book will prove helpful for those who need to grasp knowledge about neurons, models and data from both. There is much information on historical development of the field which is an extra benefit. The author succeeds in making a strong point for Kalman filtering (in one of its nonlinear versions, the UKF) as a tool for handling, model, data and uncertainty. The book, which is very well written, reads more like a research monograph than a textbook and the bias is clearly towards neural issues albeit the author's efforts to relate the material to control engineering. Given the "plant" considered by the author, it is fair to say that his efforts have been quite successful.

Welcome to the floating city of Columbia
By Parka
[[VIDEOID:mo2K4VD7BMMWB0Z]]

A lot of games these days have pretty weird characters. BioShock is one of them with its own kind of weirdness, especially the characters.

This is a large 184-page hardcover concept artbook published by Dark Horse.

The concept art features the environment, characters, weapons and other props such as propaganda posters. I like the environment art for the floating city of Columbia. It's beautiful yet mysterious.

There's plenty of character art, that of Elizabeth, Booker, Songbird and many of the grotesque and mechanical enemies, Heavy Hitters. It makes you wonder about the twisted minds of those in Columbia who created these monstrous beings. They have included quite a bit of discarded art that couldn't make it to the game as well.

The art is accompanied by some commentary and annotated handwritten text. No much. If you've not played the game, it's quite impossible to know what the game is about by looking at the art.

It's a nice companion video game artbook, but overall, I felt the art is not as refine as Deco Devolution: The Art of BioShock 2, but this is also sort of a different title.

A Kindle edition for this is also available. You can check out the preview pages on Amazon.

A good artbook, but no commentary
By Nerdcromancer
This book is packed with unused concepts, as well as visual development of characters and concepts that did make it into the game, such as Elizabeth, Booker, and Songbird. The book itself is quite large and the artwork is arranged very well. The one thing that this book is lacking is commentary; there's almost none. There's quite a few little captions that don't say anything about the artwork that isn't already obvious, and the names of the artists are not clearly mentioned, there was a total lack of effort to get the artists involved with the book. The artwork alone is worth the money, but I really wanted to see what the artists themselves had to say about the process. The best artbook I have ever seen is the Art of the Hobbit, which was written by an actual member of the design team that worked on the movie, and was full to the brim with artist commentary on the process. I have seen a lot of artbooks that assume the reader has an extremely low attention span and isn't interested in anything except finished promotional art. This book doesn't stoop that low, but a caption did refer to a brilliant and detailed color painting as "a sketch." As an artist, it would have frustrated me to no end to see a concept I had spent so much time on referred to as simply a sketch. Having ranted a bit about the lack of commentary, I have to say that this is not actually a bad artbook. In my opinion it is worth 20 bucks just to see the pages dedicated to Songbird. If you ravenously devour all things Bioshock Infinite like I do, then you will probably want this on your shelf. We are going to need a more in depth look at the process somewhere down the road though, and I don't think the job of explaining how great the team at irrational is should be relegated to youtube videos of Ken Levine, as brilliant as he is.

Light, Shade and Shadow (Dover Art Instruction), by E. L. Koller

During the first half of the twentieth century, E. L. Koller wrote a series of art instruction books for home study, designed to simplify various techniques for beginning artists — and help established artists polish their craft. The books are as relevant — and the information as essential — to artists today as it was then. A classic in this series, Light, Shade and Shadow, shows how the study of light is a necessary foundation for creating an appealing work of art.
Even the most beautiful drawing can appear flat without shading. But with this expert guide, every artist can learn how to use shadow to add visual dimension and drama to their work, and to master techniques such as highlighting and gradation. Beginning with the basics — casting light on simple geometric shapes — and progressing to the human figure, these step-by-step techniques, illustrations, and exercises can show artists of all abilities how to achieve a new level of depth in their work.

Great resource for learning to draw tonal values.
By Cecely Valderrama
If you've asked the question, "how do you make up values from imagination?", this book can help you. It's a little verbose sometimes, but definitely worth wading through a few extra words to get the knowledge. The principles of light, shade and shadow are laid out and explained in detail, and there are exercises to follow along with in the back. It's a small book, not even 70 pages, but it packs a lot of information. Very helpful book for anyone wishing to learn more about drawing/painting lights, shades and shadows.

A Critical History of Contemporary Architecture: 1960-2010, by Elie G. Haddad, David Rifkind

1960, following as it did the last CIAM meeting, signalled a turning point for the Modern Movement. From then on, architecture was influenced by seminal texts by Aldo Rossi and Robert Venturi, and gave rise to the first revisionary movement following Modernism. Bringing together leading experts in the field, this book provides a comprehensive, critical overview of the developments in architecture from 1960 to 2010. It consists of two parts: the first section providing a presentation of major movements in architecture after 1960, and the second, a geographic survey that covers a wide range of territories around the world. This book not only reflects the different perspectives of its various authors, but also charts a middle course between the 'aesthetic' histories that examine architecture solely in terms of its formal aspects, and the more 'ideological' histories that subject it to a critique that often skirts the discussion of its formal aspects.

Review

With modern architecture's collapse as a unified body of thought and practice by the 1960s, the global field of architectural production has been marked by extraordinary diversity and innovation. This substantial volume ranges over wide territory, providing insightful critical and geographic perspectives on the last half century of architecture and locating the most significant points of reference for a revised historical understanding. The more than twenty contributors belong to a new generation of scholars. Carefully edited by Elie Haddad and David Rifkind and generously illustrated, this is an invaluable guide to architecture's recent past as well as to its present.

In the Shadow of the Alamo, by Sherry Garland

Fifteen-year-old Lorenzo Bonifacio never intended to be a soldier. But when the soldados raid his tiny Mexican village, Lorenzo finds himself forced to join General Santa Anna's army . . . all because of the pesky goatherd Catalina and the haughty Esteban Equivel, son of the wealthiest landowner in the region.
Taken under wing by the kind Sergeant Ildefonso, Lorenzo and Esteban endure boredom, exhaustion, and hunger as the army makes its way across Mexico to San Antonio de Bexar, where rebellious norte-americanos have barricaded themselves inside an old mission called El Alamo. Neither boy can imagine what lies at the end of the march--defeat, death, glory?--and neither can accept the price paid during the fight for Texas.

From School Library Journal
Gr 5-8-Although Lorenzo Bonifacio is only 15, he is conscripted into the Mexican army for 10 years. At first, he and Esteban Esquivel, the 17-year-old son of the wealthiest landowner in the region, have nothing to do with one another, but in the end they become friends. Life in the army is vividly described, and the bloody battle scenes are realistically drawn. Hardships such as the lack of food, arbitrary justice, and the total loss of personal rights are part and parcel of this military experience. The conscripts are given outdated weapons and are not trained for battle as they are considered mere "cannon fodder." The women and children who followed the men, including Lorenzo's aunt and two younger sisters, suffer the same hardships, and many do not survive the arduous trip on foot to Texas. Santa Anna is portrayed as cruel and self-centered, desiring personal glory at all costs. Enduring physical hardships and personal tragedies, Lorenzo is transformed from a simple farmer to a soldier, and from a child to a man. Told from his perspective, the story provides a different point of view on a well-known historical event. Readers will sympathize with both the Mexican soldiers and with the rebels. A book that captures and holds young people's attention.

Gr. 6-8. Fifteen-year-old Lorenzo Bonifacio, who has never left his Mexican village, is conscripted into the Mexican army and soon finds himself with troops headed to retake the Alamo from North American settlers. The journey is hard, but Lorenzo finds solace in unexpected friendships and belief in the cause. However, when the battle finally occurs, his beliefs are challenged and his perspective is broadened as he comes to realize that triumph and tragedy and heroes and villains aren't as easily defined as he thought. In this entry in the Great Episodes series, Garland offers an alternate viewpoint of a well-known American historical event through an intimate, lively narrative that engages and informs. Along the way, she interweaves details about Mexican culture and the daily life of the times, some Spanish terms, and historical background. Lorenzo's character growth and development are realistically and sympathetically portrayed in a story that illuminates the impact of war across class and cultural boundaries. Some sources are noted at the back, and a glossary is appended. Shelle Rosenfeld

Shows the "other side" of the Texas Revolution.
By Rebecca Herman
Nine years ago, Lorenzo's father was conscripted into the Mexican army, leaving behind Lorenzo, his little sister, and their pregnant mother. They never heard from him again. The year is now 1835, and life in their small village has not gotten any easier. Since his mother's death four years ago, Lorenzo has had to care for his two younger sisters. He believes the family is cursed and never expects to see his father again. While working in the fields, Lorenzo and some of the other village men are conscripted into the army to fight in the Texas campaign. Lorenzo, at fifteen, is too young to be conscripted, but the local landowner's son lies and says he meets the age requirement. Lorenzo is forced into a war he doesn't believe in, as his aunt and sisters join the other camp followers. Tragedy after tragedy follow on the long winter march to Texas. Their ultimate destination: the Alamo. The author has written a wonderful historical novel showing the "other side" in the Texas Revolution. The Mexican soldiers are portrayed as ordinary men who were forced to join the army and had no choice but to obey their superiors. I highly reccomend this book.

In the Shadow of The Alamo
By A Customer
The book In the Shadow of The Alamo by Sherry Garland was quite interesting. The book gave people a different perspective, it told the story in the Mexican point of view. The story was told by a 15-year-old boy named Lorenzo Bonifacio. He was a normal boy that had no wishes to be in General Santa Anna's army, but nonetheless was drafted. He cursed at the rich Esteban Esquivel for putting him there. Esteban lied to the military drafter saying that Lorenzo was in fact 16 years old, just the right age to join the army. Bonifacio pleaded to the military officials saying that he was only 15 and wasn't ready to join. The officials said nothing and continued drafting. Lorenzo knew that nothing could be done so he decided not to make any trouble, and especially not to desert, because deserters would get whipped on the back or worse even killed. Lorenzo's aunt and little sisters insisted on coming with him to carry his bags and other belongings. All the recruits were to march a long way to a city where they would receive training for war. After many days of long and tiring marching, the group finally arrived at the city. Exhausted the group set up camp and soon were around fires cooking their food. Lorenzo brought with him a small wooden flute and started to play a tune. All the people that heard the tune turned their head and listened to his beautiful music. When General Santa Anna heard the music he ordered Lorenzo to be his personal musician. After the recruits were trained they were issued guns and soon left camp. Lorenzo's troop was to head for the Alamo and kill all the rebels, (the Americans). It was a long and hard journey trough the woods and soon it became winter. Many people died because of the severe cold including both of Lorenzo's sisters. The general forced his men to keep moving and before long they had arrived at the Alamo. Lorenzo's troops were forced to charge without any cover from artillery, which arrived later. Many men died at once but the Mexicans won because of their numbers. Lorenzo's "friend" Esteban had a mortal wound and died a couple days later. Even though they won the battle Lorenzo felt like they had lost it. In the many days to come Lorenzo found that the Americans had regrouped. The Americans attacked them and killed everyone and even captured General Santa Anna. This was just a brief summary of the story In the Shadow of The Alamo and you should read it to find out more!

Alamo Aveneged!
By Roger Kennedy
This is a stirring story of a young Mexican peasant who is press-ganged into Santa Anna's army, as it prepares to march North into Texas to fight the Texan rebels at the Alamo and San Jacinto. While historical fiction, this is still a worthy book.
The author has paid close attention to historical details, and has correctly listed Mexican generals, regiments and battalions. While intended for young adults, older readers will find this an entertaining read as well. The story brings light upon the suffering and privations that the Mexican army endured in order to fight this campaign. Seen in this perspective, the legendary Texas heros of the Alamo seem mere mortals, and our sympathies go out instead to the poor, bedraggled, Mexican soldiers. While not one of the great armies of the day, the Mexican military suffered from chronic shortages, poor quality officers, and corruption. Not the least of its problems was in the form of Santa Anna himself, who lead irrationally, often marching his soldiers into the ground with little concern for their well-being. The Presidente's arrogance and vanity only compounded these problems.
At the Alamo 600 Mexican solders were sacreficed to his vanity. Had the great Napolean of the West waited a few more days for his siege guns to arrive, he could have reduced the Alamo Mission to ruins, and achieved his victory at far less cost. This book points out the dismay the Mexican soldiers felt from his arrogant and detached leadership. The humilating defeat at San Jacinto would end the forlorn Texas campaign and set the stage for the far greater conflict with the United States nearly a decade later, where Santa Anna would again lead his country to defeat.

Jean de Florette & Manon of the Springs, by Marcel Pagnol

In Jean de Florette and Manon of the Springs, Marcel Pagnol (called by Andre Malraux "one of the great writers of our generation" and by Jean Renoir "the leading film artist of his age") achieve the fullest and most satisfying expression of a story that haunted him for years, a Provencal legend of vengeance exacted by a mysterious sheperdess. Pagnol brings to his treatment of this powerful, moving story his dramatist's sense of place, ambience, and character and his keen understanding of the Provencal countryside and its people. Rich with twists and ramifications, Jean de Florette and Manon of the Springs sets an idealistic city man against two secretive and deceitful Provencal country men in a superbly realized story of a struggle for life, of crime and punishment, of betrayal and revenge, and of judgment and forgiveness. In this edition, illustrated with images from the acclaimed film adaptation by Claude Berri, North Point presents Pagnol's enduring story in W.E. van Heyningen's exact and sensitive translation.

Biblical in its cadences, epic in its sweep to destiny, and old fashioned in development of character and plot, this saga charts the destruction of a Provencal family.

From Publishers Weekly
Playwright, filmmaker and novelist Pagnol (1895-1974) affectionately celebrated his native Provence along with the shrewdness and comic foibles of the folk. Jean Cadoret is a hunchback of charm and intelligence who comes from town to settle on his inherited estate where he plans to farm scientifically. His wife Aimee, a former small-time opera singer, and adoring little daughter Manon work by his side. But the jealous Soubeyransthe local patriarch Cesar and his nephew, the clownish Ugolincraftily plug up a spring on Jean's farm and wait for him to fail. When a cruel summer drought drives Jean to despair and eventually death, the Soubeyrans buy his land cheaply and divert the water for their own lucrative carnation farm. In the sequel, Manon appears as a picturesque goat-girl/dryad, scampering over the rocks in cast-off opera gear and playing her pipes. She avenges her parents and falls in love. The end brings astonishing revelations. Pagnol depicts his villagers as post-Roman pagans whose "natural brutality" shows through their Christian veneer. As in the author's earlier naturalist novels, the landscape and the willful spring are forces molding human fates. Those who offend nature, here lushly described, pay a penalty. There are eight pages of photos (not seen by PW), from the recently released films, which follow the novels closely.

From Library Journal
The recent success of two French films based on Pagnol's two-part novel will no doubt guarantee a ready-made audience for this book. But its appearance for the first time in English is an event in itself. With sweeping strokes Pagnol creates Greek tragedy in the hillsides north of Marseilles, hills teeming with wild game, fragrant with fig and almond trees, but only fitfully fed by underground streams. It is the search for precious water to irrigate his crops that drives the hunchbacked idealist Jean de Florette to his death. In Manon , the tables turn, and Jean's daughter redeems her father's wasted life while she wreaks vengeance on his enemies. The charm of Pagnol's work lies in his love for the peasants of his native Provence. Lisa Mullenneaux, Iowa City

Masterful, rich, rewarding
By A Customer
(The two novels read as one, the second simply taking up--with no exposition--where the first leaves off.) One of the best books I've read in the last decade. Simple, charming, and often very funny, but also poignant, moving, characterized by profound human understanding, generating surprising emotional power, and rising to the haunting grandeur of genuine tragedy. The sharp, insightful portrayals of the leading Provence peasant characters are unforgettably vivid and "right," thoroughly convincing, and the evocations of their lives and speech and the countryside through which they move could only have been written by a true countryman. A magnificent achievement and a great read. Don't miss this under-rated classic of modern French literature.

As poignant as any trilogy of ancient Grecian tragedy
By Love Thy Enemy
This story runs as inevitable Grecian tragedy building on the prideful ignorance of Jean, the main character. He does not know of the spring which was blocked and concealed by the neighbor who desires not only his land to grow chrysthanthemums upon, but one day when she blooms, his daughter Manon. With the conspiracy of friends, this covetous neighbor blocks the spring which would bring life and fertility to the farm. Jean tries everything including tragically dynamite to bring the waters to flow with abundant life.

When all is too late we discover unknown family ties which would have made Jean not a rejected outsider intruding upon and rejected by this enclosed and impoverished mountain farming community but embraced as a lost son. The inevitable development and tragedy of these two films together is as stately as as horrifying as a trilogy of ancient Greek plays, as profound and as universal. Watch them carefully and rivers of understanding will wash you with renewed humanity.
