Very good, but with limitations

This is a strange book - a mixture of scholarly research, history, biography, philosophy, self-help, and tinges of spirituality. That will turn some readers off, but I like the book because I think the author has done his homework and makes good points, the most important being that we can all accomplish more than we think if we're guided by a vision and really try.

That said, the author doesn't really offer a 'formula' for high achievement (genius level or otherwise), as some readers may be hoping for. Instead, he presents a large number of traits typically possessed by high achievers, illustrates them with examples (often quite detailed), and implies that adopting these traits will work for us also. That may even be true, but there are two issues here:

(a) It's not clear that any particular 'genius' possesses all or nearly all of the traits. Or at least the author doesn't make the case for that.

(b) Even if geniuses do universally possess these traits, will developing these traits necessarily enable you to achieve at a very high level? Not necessarily, we hear about those who tried and succeeded, not those who tried (in the right ways) and failed.

But even with these critiques, this is an informative and interesting book which can provide inspiration and useful wisdom, so I do recommend it to anyone seeking to enhance to their ability to achieve.

An inspirational piece of writing that can be described by in no other way than truly GENIUS

I had recently started an account with audible.com's subscription service (highly recommended). With that I was given 1 free book of my choosing. Prior to this transaction, I'd had my eye on "Awakening" as I was in search of a self-help book that wouldn't be too conventional. To my surprise, this was far more than what would be constituted as any kind of "Self-help" book. No, that title would not do the contents of this piece justice.

The best way one would be able to describe "Awakening your Inner Genius" would be as an Inspirational coach for your mind. Mr. Patrick at no point alludes to this book being any form of path to divine enlightenment as most authors of this genre would, but rather he presents the reader with the primary idiosyncrasies shared between the worlds most influential individuals and how they came about being refereed to as "Geniuses".

In many ways, "Awakening your Inner Genius" is as much a biography of history's most profound movers and shakers as much as it is a tool for enhancing the readers perception of the term "Genius". From the opening chapter to the "About the Author" excerpt in the final pages, the author expresses his charismatic and overall delightfully optimistic outlook on the human condition through his presentation of the subject matter. If this book has anything going for it, it's the fact that the author presents his work in the most accessible and enjoyable fashion that he possibly could. This was clearly a labor of love by Mr. Patrick, an assertion one can confirm only by seeing how eloquently he describes the life and times of Leonardo Da vinci, Nikola Tesla and Alexander the Great (among many others).

Now, subject matter and tone of writing are always important factors to take into consideration when writing a book of this type, but in the end this IS a self improvement book. So, the inquiry presents itself: does this book succeed in awakening the readers "Inner genius"?

The answer is yes, I would say so. I have never held such passion for pursuing my desired job field as much as I have after reading this book. I am a junior in high school; a crucial point of discovery at any point in an individuals life. I have been constantly debating with myself what my potential career may be, most of the time begrudgingly so. After the month or so of exploring this text, I have now found where my true desires lie and have slowly been working my way through the steps in order to achieve this dream. This book has posed a great help in this regard. Because of this, I may come off as a tad bias, but in the end i can proudly state that "Awakening your Inner Genius" has impacted me in a profound way no other book of the type has even come close to doing and I greatly wish that it may have the same effect on any and all who decide to give it a read.

These include non-alcoholic cereal-based (maize/ finger millet/ sorghum) beverages such as porridges (uji and kirario), fermented milk products (kule naoto, mursik, amabere amaruranu, and suusa), alcoholic beverages from maize and/ or sorghum or millet malt (busaa, chekwe, marwa, and chibuku), fermented fruit mashes/ wine (mnazi and muratina), and distilled spirits (chan’gaa). All the fermentation processes used in the production of these products applies spontaneous inoculation, whereby the microbes associated with the raw food material and the processing environment serves as inoculants. In Kenya, most of these foods and beverages are basically similar but only the names are varied depending on the locality. Although these products have been consumed for many years as safe products, recently, some of them have been linked to deaths and adverse health effects. Some of the products are produced under unhygienic conditions and have found their way into commercial outlets however with inconsistent quality, unassured safety, and limited shelf-life. Research on the processing technologies of these foods is low and none of the products has been produced under controlled conditions using starter cultures. To develop processing technologies for these foods and contribute to food security, it is essential that the microbiology and biochemistry of the products be studied using modern molecular diagnostic techniques and their chemical composition characterized. Moreover, fermentation parameters needs to be defined and standard equipment employed to attain controlled fermentation. This article reviews the available information regarding traditional fermented foods in Kenya, challenges in developing technologies for their controlled-fermentation production, and suggests recommendations for potential research areas.

From the Neolithic Jar to Seventh Generation

You'll probably only purchase this book if you're forced to by your Graphic Design class in university. Otherwise, why would you pay $45 for a paperback? But that's a shame because the quality of this production, from the extensive survey of packaging design history (from a Neolithic jar to Seventh Generation laundry detergent) to the interesting case studies, to the samples of various modern packages would be a fascinating book for anyone to have on their coffee table.

Of course, like many in the design field, the creators of a design product failed to take into account the very topic they describe inside: the packaging design of "Packaging Design" is sub par, even for a standard book. The cover is uninspired and the book is just a square book. Also, there are noticeable misses in the history of packaging design such as the best wine packaging (Bonny Doon) and of course, the brilliant Apple packages (A packaging design book without the iPod??).

All in all, this is a great book on the topic. A history nerd will love the old images and a design nerd will love the case studies. Blame the modern education system for the exorbitant price.

Title says it all - but I wish it had more.

PACKAGING DESIGN: SUCCESSFUL PRODUCT BRANDING FROM CONCEPT TO SHELF by Marianne R. Klimchuk and Sandra A. Krasovec is a delight to the eyes. Full of brilliant photos going quite far back into the late 19th century, all on glossy pages, this book really delivers.

My wife happened to glance at a few pages and remarked how angry it makes her that an old reliable brand suddenly repackages. This book explains, among other things, why that is done. The tactic is a big gamble, yet this book simply clarifies how the modern companies want things to "pop off the shelves". "Eye-catching" is the byword, and it always has been as attested by the older photos here.

A really fun experience for me was seeing the modern process, how talented artists sketch ideas for packaging and retail display. This not-quite-coffee-table-sized book, which is a light and slender paperback considering what is packed into it, will tell all.

Valuable information and photographs, if a touch dry...

As someone in the marketing profession, this book on packaging design piqued my interest...I felt like it could give me some technical, historical, and even psychological insight into the aims and means of design and copy. And to a large extent, it succeeded admirably. Amply illustrated, it's a great crash course, especially rich in information about the evolution of packaging and the modern marketplace. The photos are well-chosen, and with full-color throughout, the examples really pop.

The only downside is that the tone is relatively academic and dry, making it a bit hard to read cover-to-cover. I understand that it's not written with the layperson in mind, but still, a lighter tone would have made it more accessible to a wider range of readers--especially with information this intriguing.
