Absolute Beginner's Guide

Scholastic sent me an email about this new workbook which I immediately ordered upon its release. As an adult, I wanted to utilize this workbook as a refresher to simple grammatical mistakes I may make.

I can say with enthusiasm that Marvin Terban's learning packet includes the new grammatical rules and also specifies older rules that are acceptable (but are still wrong to continue using). For example, in the section for "Apostrophes," Mr. Terban notes that in the past, the rule was to add an apostrophe + -s after a number to make it plural. Today, however, Mr. Terban explains that the new rule is to simply add -s which looks like 1990s instead of 1990's. Terban's exercises range from circling a missing punctuation mark to rewriting certain words to reviewing an email filled with grammatical mistakes.

Overall, this is a workbook for ultimate beginner writers. Terban begins with exercises in commas, moves on to capital letters, punctuation marks, apostrophes, quotation marks, and finishes with colons and semicolons. At the end of the book, the answers are provided. All together, this is a great tool for first to third graders who are learning to write. Terban keeps the exercises simple, yet thought-provoking while using straightforward language suited for a novice teacher OR writer.

Great workbook

We used this in our homeschool for 4th grade. My daughter enjoyed the examples which are often riddles, silly sayings, etc. The only reason I did not give it 5 stars is that often it was hard to find the student's marks (especially commas) in the strings of text. Color text would be helpful... but probably also increase the cost.

Although ASCE 7-10 (the 2012 IBC) formally recognizes modal response spectrum analysis as well as seismic response history analyses, the modal response spectrum analysis is still more common in design office usage and is the primary subject of this seminar. The background and details are explained in Part I of this seminar where a step-by-step analysis procedure is introduced, and a three-story, one-bay frame example is begun to be solved entirely manually to illustrate application of the procedure. The manual solution of the three-story, one-bay frame example is completed in Part II of this seminar, the remainder of which is devoted exclusively to the detailed design of a 20-story reinforced concrete shear wall-frame building. Modal response spectrum analysis is used as the basis of design. Design utilizing the Equivalent Lateral Force Procedure is also illustrated because it is basically a prerequisite to design using the Model Response Spectrum Analysis Procedure.

... This will be your bible if you, like me, are studying water chemistry. Stumm and Morgan made a compendium of water chemistry, useful, easy, and full of real examples reviewed in detail. Each time I need to find a formula, a factor or constant, or just a quick look for a doubt, the first book I always took is this one. I truly recommend you this book.

About the Author
Frank Marra worked at the Staten Island Landfill World Trade Center Recovery Site from September 2001 until February 2002, an experience that served as inspiration for From Landfill to Hallowed Ground: The Largest Crime Scene in America. His law enforcement career included seventeen years with the New York City Police Department and the rank of Detective and then Lieutenant. He was born in Staten Island, New York, and currently resides in Millstone, New Jersey, with his wife Laura and three sons, Anthony, Dominic, and Frank. Maria Bellia Abbate, inspired by Frank's experiences at the Recovery Site, was eager to assist in helping to put all his stories and memories together to create From Landfill to Hallowed Ground. Currently she is a teacher in Staten Island. A native of Brooklyn, New York, Maria lives in Millstone, New Jersey, with her husband Michael and her three children, Alexa, Michael, and Delilah.

A vivid reminder

A well written account of the aftermath and recovery operation following 9/11. Graphic in parts and enlightening on something I was unaware of, it tells the sad personal account of one mans experiences helping search, identify and eventually oversee some of the rubble that remained of the twin towers. I thought this would be a tough emotional read, but it was so factual this for me while very sad was not upsetting. Thank you for sharing your experiences, these memories need to be preserved to remind future generations of the horror of 9/11. I also hope this brought some healing and closure of its own to the authors and will comfort families of the victims.

Thoroughly enjoyed this book. Very informative. I had the opportunity to visit Ground Zero and the Landfill with my brother in law then
Chief Anthony Marra shortly after 9/11. I learned so much more information from the book. My favorite chapter is the Red Cross Nurse. It is an interesting read and I highly recommend it.

just okay

The debris from the collapse of the Twin Towers was barged to the Staten Island Landfill, and Det. Marra was one of those assigned to go through it. In this book he chronicles his experiences sifting through the debris and cataloging the vehicles, some crushed and some intact. The subject is fascinating and humbling but the book fell short of my expectations.

There is a lot of general information but not enough anecdotes. It would have been a much better book if Marra had spoken with more people who also worked the Landfill. The book would benefit from more stories like that of the woman who came to Staten Island with her children to sit in her late husband's car. There aren't enough meaningful passages like that one. The photographs are generic and add nothing.

These seem like paltry quibbles in light of Marra's service to NY and the world, but it's an expensive book for what you get. Thank you, sir, for your service, and for giving us a glimpse of what it was like working the Staten Island Landfill. I would have liked to know a lot more.

While Arthur Matthews is the REAL DEAL, his edited book is not

I read the original in 1969 of what Arthur Matthews wrote about his own experiences in those sections of "The Wall of Light" that pertain to him.

I can tell you emphatically -- absolutely -- that there were no references to Jesus in the original. Whomever has inserted those passages in this book is grossly dishonest. I know that Matthews was a deeply spiritual man who did not believe in conventional religions. Period. I know this for a fact.

Instead, Matthews was taken to a place on Venus where he said he met with a group called "The Council of Nine." This council could tell whether he was telling the truth. He was asked to describe the earth sciences as he understood them. He described biology, chemistry, all of the physical sciences as he knew them. When he described physics, the council objected that he was untruthful. Matthews said this was the earth's understanding. This council told him this was completely wrong, and was vociferous in its objection to its basic principles.

As for the spiritual/religious stuff, the council told him that they were going to give him the secret to life at the end of his several meetings with them. The secret was love. Matthews noted in the original I read that this comported with the message of many of the earth religions. That was the extent of any reference to Jesus. This book makes Matthews sound like a born-again Christian, which he was decidedly NOT.

Further, the meetings with the Venusians have been dumbed down in this book. The original text was far more exciting. For example, Matthews described his initial meeting with a Venusian couple. The man was about 650+ years and the woman about 550+ years old. He extolled their beauty and serenity. They grilled him during meetings over two years about highly detailed aspects of Tesla's work before ever going any further with him. Matthews made a point that there was no way anyone could have known about these highly technical aspects of Tesla's work, because Tesla had not discussed them with anyone but Matthews in letters between the two. Those letters were in Matthews' possession when Tesla died and not the US government, who declared all of Tesla's private papers 'classified' within days of his death. The US government didn't know about Tesla's special relationship with Matthews at the time. How do I know this? Matthews tried to contact the US government to show them highly technical aspects of Tesla's work during the 50s. The US govt. blew Matthews off as a Canadian kook. Matthews also contacted the Canadian government, who thought the same thing. So Matthews did the next logical step: he gave the information to the Russians.

As I wrote at the beginning of this review, I read this document in 1969. It made such an impression on me that I have never forgotten its contents. I can still see myself reading the original. I can still feel how I felt when I read it. I was shocked, actually, to see parts of it in "The Wall of Light," 37 years later.

BTW, I cant review the 'Tesla-written' parts of this book. I have no way of knowing if they've been altered. The Matthews drawings appear somewhat genuine. The book is worth it for the Tesla part. Read the Matthews account with a jaundiced eye, and be suspect about about the sentimental parts of it. Matthews was not a sentimentalist.

I am giving three stars to what should be a five-star read because of the grossly inaccurate editing of Matthews writings in the book, obviously done after he died.

Not worth reading!

It is obvious that Matthews was a fan of Tesla. The first part of the book is a rather boring account of Tesla's life, in his "own" words. The second part, The Wall of Light is about the alleged encounters of Matthews with Venusians and their spacecraft. In the first pages I was already growing suspicious about his descriptions and the way he wrote his accounts. For somebody who had repeatedly contact with the spacecraft, his drawings and description is rather superficial. Then, the Venusians show him a time machine that takes him 2000 years in the future where he learns that a third world war has destroyed most of the world between 1971 and 1978. Oh well... When he described the trees, lakes and buildings on Venus and cities and canals on Mars, he didn't envision that by now we have photographed these rather desolate planets in detail. The book has all the earmarks of wishful thinking. Only good if you are in for a science fiction novel.

true greatness

One of my fave players of all-time comes out with an autobio that just fits exactly the way he played. It's a cool, calm, composed, honest look at a life in hockey, and I have even greater respect for his career and the man himself after reading this. The knee injuries alone just leave my mind boggled as to how he was able to play at such a high level all those seasons. It also explains his style of play that was more controlled (think Nicklas Lidstrom but tougher) as he aged.

Also, some gems were getting to know how as a young 24-year-old defenseman reacted to all the craziness of the '72 Summit Series as well as learning more about those late '70s to early '90s Boston Bruins teams. It was also interesting to note how Park was one of the early voices to question Alan Eagleson's involvement in the slush funds the Canada Cups became (as well as all the other scams the guy pulled as NHLPA head).

Plus if you thought the Toronto Maple Leafs were a messed-up organization back in the Harold Ballard era, wait till you read about Park's trip (during his junior Marlies' days when the Laffs owned the junior team in Toronto) to the emergency ward and subsequent trip to see the Leafs' team doctor (who it turned out was a gynecologist!).

Very happy with this book - 70's Bruin's fan

Saw this book when I bought Sanderson's new book. The Boston Bruins were huge in the 70's when I was a kid growing up in the suburbs (woods & ponds) outside of Boston. I remember the 10 games with Orr & Park on the powerplay. Obviously we didn't know it would be just 10 games. Best powerplay point pair ever. I remember the tough losses against the Canadians. All this stuff is in the book and lots more. Great addition to my Boston Bruin's books collection (along with Ted Green, Derek Sanderson, Bobby Orr). Thanks Brad!

So, didn't read the book, but I'm sure it's great-like the man himself. Anyhow, I'm on the train back to Long Island with my friends having just been freaked out by seeing The Exorcist in,(?), 1974. A voice from the seat behind us says "You're mother s@&ks c£¥k in hell," a quote from the movie. I turn around, and it' s Brad Park. What a nice guy. Funny, approachable, just adding to the fun and conversation. Yeah, one of the game's great, but I have a feeling, (more importantly), a GREAT guy too. Buy the book already.
