Solomon Perel's may be one of the strangest wartime memoirs ever committed to print. At the outbreak of World War II Perel, a young Polish Jew, was interned in a Soviet orphanage. Captured by Wehrmacht soldiers, Perel, fluent in Russian and German, passed himself off as an ethnic German and was adopted by the Nazi unit to act as a translator--and as something of a mascot. Sent to Berlin to an all-male military school, Perel managed against all odds to keep his secret (after the war, he revealed his true identity to his disbelieving comrades-in-arms); in the meantime, his family perished. Now available for the first time in English translation, the full book revels in a sharp sense of irony and an ever-unfolding abundance of improbable episodes.

In this inspiration for the 1990 Golden Globe-winning film, Europa, Europa, appearing now in English translation, Perel details his remarkable story of survival as a Jewish boy during World War II. While fleeing eastward from German-occupied Poland, he fell into German hands. Amazingly, he managed to convince his captors that he, too, was German, though orphaned. The Germans accepted him into their ranks and sent him to an elite training school for the Hitler Youth until war's end. Though his story offers a vastly different view of the war, Perel spends less time on details of the Nazi regime and instead focuses on his fear of detection. The resulting repetition can make for disappointing reading. Perel's story is indeed incredible, but it is not that well written. During World War II, Perel, a young German Jew, posed as a Nazi to survive. The recent film Europa, Europa is also Perel's story, but here he tells it and it is shorn of Hollywood theatrics. But the story remains strong. Separated from his family and trapped behind German lines, he claimed to be Lithuanian German and was hailed as "repatriated." Valued as a Russian interpreter, he became mascot of his army unit. He was too young to stay at the front, so he was sent back to Hitler Youth school. He excelled and was often held up as a model Aryan, though he constantly feared for his life. Three people, including an army doctor, learned his secret, but none betrayed him. The glimpses of life in Germany during World War II and Perel's return in Nazi uniform to his childhood neighborhood and reunions with family and friends are most haunting. Why did Perel masquerade as a Nazi? His mother's last words to him were: "You must survive." This story must, too. Kevin Grandfield

Compelling!

My father was in a very similar situation. I know bits and pieces of the story, but he talks very little about it since it is much too painful for him. Though the situations aren't identical, Perel's story gave me some insight into what my father may have experienced and why he is who he is.

I am grateful that Mr. Perel had the strength and courage to put his journey into words and to put the words onto paper. For every book that is written to describe the Holocaust, there are probably thousands of untold stories - either because the person didn't make it through the ordeal or because it is too painful to live through again.

A true story about a Jewish boy captured by the Nazis in 1941. He managed to convince them he was German and they adopted him as their mascot. The Commander of the Division wanted to adopt him and planned to take him to his home after German won the war. He was sent to the Nazi Youth School to be schooled to become a Hitler Youth. Fortunately, the war was lost to Germany in 1945 and he was liberated. Very compelling.

A really good and interesting book.

As far as I remember I saw the film version of this book before I read it. I recommend that the book be read before watching the movie. This is a book I've read two times and it was definately worth the time. Unimaginable what it must've been like to be in his place. Survival was the driving force for Perel. Great book.

The Best Fantasy Art Book in the World

This is an amazing book. Everyone I know who have it thinks so. The book is full with colourfull paintings of fantastic places, caracters, heros, dragons, animals, settings, planets, continents, miths, episodes, and the like. For enyone who likes colours and heroic images. Fantasy at its best: Fantasy as Fantasy. Many painters have contributed their best works to this volume. I have looked to find a copy of this book for more then ten years, and could not find one. It is a book from the 70's, and is out-of-print by now. But still it influenced me to paint the walls in my appartment in deep-blue. The book title that mentions "Icarus", the mithical hero who tried to fly to the sun and burned his artifitial wings when he approached it, reveals the philosophical framework that gives the book its artistic unity as a hole. The questions are not possed as simple propositions or statements, but rather in picturesque language that springs right out of our archytipal unconsiousness. It's content is more about dreaming than about reality, and still, it posses questions about our cosmogonies, astronomies, science, technology, culture, gender, humanity, power, evolutional history and psychy. "[Fantasy] art is a lie that tell the truth" (Picasso). Art is at its best when it posses important questions, and find the technical tools to deal with them. This book certainly satisfies these two requirements.

Seventies SciFi/Fantasy Illustration

I succumbed to an outburst of Roger Dean nostalgia recently and bought this book and the "Dragon's Dream" app. I regret the latter, and KIND of regret the former. Don't get me wrong, all the art is at least very good. However the book is kind of pretentious and I'm not crazy about a lot of the pieces included - "Once Upon a Time" is a better selection of fantasy art for the era imho (and it includes Brian Froud and Pauline Ellison.) I wish I'd spent the money on another Dragon's Dream publication, like "The Album Cover Album," the "Dragon's Dream" book, or "The Studio" instead.

"Flights of Icarus" is a late-seventies collection of the work of 32 artists, some fave raves of the era, others unknown to me, anyway. It's the size of an old LP cover, as it was intended to be sold on racks at record stores back in the day. The 130-odd mostly full-page illustrations are collected into eight sections or "Moments" (FALL & FLIGHT, LEVIATHANS, LEGEND, XANADU, NOWHERE, TIME, SPACE, and ORACLES,) each Moment being prefaced with two pages of progressive-rock style philosophy by Donald Lehmkuhl - lists of weighty aphorisms like "Existence glides from fire to water, from water to fire" or "Nature specializes in failures. Only god is right the first time."

Roger Dean contributes five pieces to the collection, all collected elsewhere: DRAGON, PATHWAYS, FLIGHTS OF ICARUS (the cover illo,) GREENSLADE SEA, and RELAYER. Chris Foss, Jeffrey Jones, Michael Kaluta, Alan Lee, Syd Mead, Bruce Pennington, Barry Windsor-Smith (one fantasy illo,) and Berni Wrightson (two dinosaur pictures) all contribute a few pieces. Other artists include Patrick Woodroffe and Una Woodruff, Ian Miller, and Jim Fitzpatrick.

I certainly wouldn't recommend this over, say, Dean's famous "Views" or it's later sequel, "Magnetic Storm." FoI is worth a look, but I think if you're looking for good examples of these artists' work, you're better off with individual collections like Mythopoeikon, Eschatus, or Faeries.

Possibly the most comprehensive book on the human condition

This is quite possibly the most comprehensive book ever written on the human condition, be it the dawn of the 20th century (when the book was written) or the dawn of the 21st century.
This book sadly fell out of print a few years ago, and I am so happy that it is once again available and able to enlighten a whole new generation. Edward Carpenter was a turn-of-the-century poet and philosopher who collected his works into this magnificent volume. He writes about democracy, not in the political sense, but in the social sense. Writing on equality, love, hope and the need to express one's sense of joy in a world that holds so much, Carpenter opens the mind and heart to the true issues that are fundamental to all people.
Carpenter's poetry and prose are inspirational and true to everyone's life, regardless of class, color or creed. He truly celebrates life the way it should be celebrated. A glorious tour-de-force, Towards Democracy is a book I would recommend to anyone and everyone.
I was given this book in 1991 by a friend as a going away (to college) gift. I was going through many changes in my life, and facing massive depression because of them. He gave me the book after turning to a passage that directly related to my situation, and I have read it no less than five times cover-to-cover. I believe that fate sent him to that book, and in turn, brought it into my life.
Any time I feel down-trodden or unable to focus on what is really important in my life, I read a little. It never fails to help. I have shared this book with friends, and they all think it is one of the most brilliant and eloquent books they've read.
Don't get me wrong, this is not a book centered on religion, and many of the essays are descriptions of places Carpenter's seen. However, it is his unique vision of the world, his wonderful prose and immense respect of life that make this a book that belongs in every library.

England's Walt Whitman

There are certain people and particular pieces of literature that belong to the fabric of man's truest nature. This book, like "Leaves Of Grass" and "Walden" and Emerson's essays, belongs in that category. This is one of those books that are for those quiet moments when the inner space within needs nourishment. Carpenter is the type of man I long to talk to. He understands the fundamentals of the human experience. He is very different than W.W. yet very similar. W.W.'s poetry is more to my liking but Carpenter's temperament and perspective makes W.W. more poignant and relevant. Very powerful lives and natures entangled in the cosmic dance of life. They compliment one another. This is a book to be sipped and savoured in the quiet moments at either the beginning or end of one's day.
