Felt prepared for the exam
By Lauren
I read this book the week before my clinical skill exam. The first section contains general information about the testing center areas. There are hotels listed, restaurants, and transportation suggestions. The next section contains information about the format of the exam and the expectations. It reviews how to introduce yourself, what types of questions to ask, and what to do in the physical exam. I appreciated this since I had been on surgery the past couple of rotations, so I needed a refresher. The next section had "mini-cases". They gave little scenarios, then a good differential and examples of diagnostic studies to order. The last section had more in-depth cases. The formats given were the same as the real exam. They give you check-offs that are specific on what information you should get. It also has tips on difficult patients you might encounter. Then, a sample note is given. It takes a while to get through the book, and it is such an annoying test to prepare for! But I was nervous and this book allowed me to feel well prepared. I will delete this post if I don't end up passing!!

Good enough
By Amazon Customer
You don't really need much to pass this thing, and trust me when I say it's easy to pass. Read through the baby cases a few times, do the mock exam if you're school has one and you'll be fine. If you want to be crazy about it, you could always ad the "mastering the USMLE CS," but no way I had time to go through that. Study this one for a week, then the plane ride there if it applys, be nice to the patients and you're good.

I reviewed this book with my brother who was preparing for the comlex pe exam. We found everything we needed in the text. We watched csevideo with the first aid and it was like seeing the text come to life. I highly recommend this combination for either the comlex or the cs exam. Yes, we both passed with a greats scores.

White Corridor: A Peculiar Crimes Unit Mystery (Bryant & May series Book 5), by Christopher Fowler

From using crackpot psychics to cutting-edge forensics, Arthur Bryant and John May are famous for their maddeningly unorthodox approach to solving crimes that the ordinary police cannot. Now Christopher Fowler, “a new master of the classical detective story,”* brings back crime detection’s oddest—and oldest—couple to solve the ultimate locked room mystery.

It’s an “impossible” crime—a member of the Peculiar Crimes Unit killed inside a locked autopsy room populated only by the dead and to which only four PCU members had a key. And to make matters worse, the Unit has been shut down for a forced “vacation” and Bryant and May are stuck in a van miles away in the Dartmoor countryside during a freak snowstorm on their way to a convention of psychics.

Now, with Sergeant Janice Longbright in charge at headquarters, Bryant and May must crack the case by cell phone while trying to stop a second murder without freezing to death. For among the line of snowed-in vehicles, a killer is on the prowl, a beautiful woman is on the run from a man who seeks either redemption or another victim, and an innocent child is caught in the middle.

Weaving together two electrifying cases, White Corridor is an unforgettable triumph—by turns hilarious and harrowing—as two of detective fiction’s most marvelous characters confront one of human nature’s darkest mysteries: the ability to deceive, deny, and destroy.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Blending humor and brilliant detection, Fowler's excellent fifth novel to feature the engaging if bizarre exploits of London's Peculiar Crimes Unit (after 2006's Ten Second Staircase) offers two challenging mysteries for his pair of eccentric sleuths, Arthur Bryant and John May. While driving to an international spiritualists' convention, Bryant and May find themselves trapped on the road near Dartmoor in a blizzard. Lurking among the stalled vehicles is a man who may be a multiple murderer. At the same time, the two try to help via cellphone their colleagues back in London, who must solve the locked-room murder of a PCU member, retiring pathologist Oswald Finch, before the unit is finally shut down for good. The fair-play solution will particularly satisfy lovers of golden age mysteries. Once again, Fowler shows himself to be a master of the impossible crime tale. (June)

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Senior-citizen sleuths Arthur Bryant and John May have never been ones to play by the rules. As the most distinguished (read oldest) members of London's peculiar Peculiar Crimes Unit, the men pride themselves on cracking cases no right-minded detectives would attempt. This fifth offering (after Ten Second Staircase, 2006) finds the two stranded in a deadly blizzard en route to a spiritualists' convention. (Detective Bryant has long been both ridiculed and admired for his obsession with the occult.) In their absence, the unit's forensic pathologist, who had been having second thoughts about his imminent retirement, is found dead in the morgue. The room was locked from the inside, and only four members of the PCU had keys. Patchy cell-phone reception can't keep Bryant and May from participating in the investigation. Meanwhile, the snow (and plot) thickens when the duo encounters a young woman and her son seeking protection from a charming French drifter. Sherlock Holmes meets Inspector Clouseau in this mordant, award-winning series in which Fowler gleefully skewers religious zealots and government officials alike. Of one of the latter he writes: "It was . . . as if Countess Bathory and Vlad the Impaler had mated to create the perfect bureaucratic hatchet man." Allison Block

Old Guys rule!
By scuba sally
Arthur Bryant and John May are two octogeniarians who still solve crimes for the Home office despite much dismay from that said office. The two detectives use unconconventional and slightly illegal methods in their attempts to bring the perps to justice, however, their clear-up rate is phenonimally good as compared to the Met and this state of affairs does not sit well with the Home office who has been trying, unsuccessfully, to close down the Peculiar Crimes Unit since the end of the second world war.
In this particular episode May and Bryant are stuck, along with sundry other vehicles in a snow drift while they were on their way to a spiritualist convention. Meanwhile, back at the unit, their pathologist has been found dead in his lab under suspicious circumstances. And the team has to solve the death without the help of Bryant and May, or rather, only with the help of arcane hints sent from Arthur's cell phone. At the same time, there is someone murdering the occupants of various cars that are stuck in the same drift as Bryant and May. A very pithy puzzle to solve within an insanely short period of time and with the Home Office eagarly waiting for them to fail.
The dialogue is witty and makes for a very entertaining read.

Definitive British Mystery
By Gary Griffiths
If Ken Bruen's east London crime novels featuring the brutal and boorish Inspector Brant are literature as rugby, then Christopher Fowler's mysteries of the aging Brant and May detective duo are symphonies. Both entertaining, but Bruen is jarring and violent where Fowler is refined, cultured, and subtle. Fowler writes the classic British mystery: dryly humorous, understated, unadorned, and intelligent. In this outing, inspectors Arthur Brant and John May, the irascible and unorthodox heads of London's Peculiar Crimes Division, find themselves stranded in a freak blizzard on the moors of southern England, leaving Sergeant Janice Longbright in charge to solve the ultimate "murder in the inside-locked room" mystery of the team's chief forensic scientist. Meanwhile, a serial killer is on the loose in the snowdrifts, keeping our discerning duo occupied between cell phone-assist calls to Longbright and her short-handed crew. But despite facing simultaneous murder investigations and answering some nagging questions about the apparent drug overdose death of a young woman whose body occupies the morgue, the real terror facing the PCU team is the looming stationhouse tour of an insufferable princess and PCU nemesis Oskar Kasavian, the London PD bureaucrat bent on shutting the renegade crime-solving unit down.

Rich in allegory and clever forensics, contemporary crime fiction's most eccentric inspectors plough through deliciously convoluted threads of seemingly unrelated mysteries, taking a few keenly twisted turns before arriving at a clever and, at least for me, a totally unexpected climax. Brilliant character development and sharp, witty, dialogue add up for one of the year's most engaging and enjoyable crime novels. If you haven't met Brant and May yet, this is as good a place as any to start - and chances are you'll not remain a stranger.

A Unique Hodgepodge
By Elaine Campbell
This is a highly unusual murder mystery. There are two murder cases here, and two elderly eccentric detectives to solve them.

What is unique here is the style, the pastiche and the wit of the writing. I've never quite read anything like it. Sort of an Ian Fleming in reverse. Not sophisticated. Not urbane in the sense that the paranormal is considered to be "bunk." We've got witches running around with detectives. And they actually seem to belong together.

So with all this flair, there is hardly a dull moment. The chapters are also short, which keeps the plots running at a fast pace. One can almost read this book as theatrical entertainment.

The two mysteries conclude very surprisingly. I personally didn't come close to guessing the resolution of either. In one a coroner is found dead in a locked room. In the other an abused child, now a grown man, tries to win the questionable hand of an elusive woman. Interspersed are massive snowstorms, seedy street scenes and a crew of professionals, many of whom have self doubts as to their actual abilities.

Unlike the books of Stuart M. Kaminsky, don't expect in-depth character depiction. Though one gets a kick out of the two elderly detectives, all of the cast of characters remain just on the edge of three dimensionality. But they don't get there.

Yet for a rip roaring good time, and an easy read of a very unusual work, this is the book.

A Remarkably Comprehensive Guide for the Sitcom Writer
By Erik Marshall
Evan Smith's "Writing Television Sitcoms" is at turns both a practical handbook on building a career as a sticom scribe and a somewhat academic inquiry into the nature of comedy itself, developing a complete, independent school of thought. But what is ultimately most remarkable about Smith's work is its beguilingly logical approach. The book develops an entire theory of comedy writing to help the reader write their specs and then clearly delineates the process of turning those specs into a workable career. Especially cogent were the passages on building a script from the ground up and finding an agent in the sometimes labyrinthine Hollywood system. Like the fictional shopper in the Total cereal commercials, you might well have to read a half dozen other books on the craft to get the comedic nutrition contained in just one of Evan Smith's "Writing Television Sitcoms" Truly a must read for any current or aspiring sitcom writers.

Inspiring to all students of writing.
By Kevin Miller
Evan Smith introduces Writing Television Sitcoms as the all-in-one writer's guide to sitcoms. It sounds heavy, but honestly true. There is no aspect of TV sitcom writing a student, or otherwise, could dream up a question for which Smith doesn't have an answer. He covers how to create a sitcom, write it, and sell it. And in the first chapters he even details how anyone can make a career in writing. You will find yourself beaming with childlike enthusiasm as your eyes run through Writing Television Sitcoms.

Writers Win with Writing Television Sitcoms!
By A Customer
As a young writer who always reads and looks for books on TV and film writing, I found the best and most thorough information in Smith's book. He gives you much more than the title suggests--valuable tips on how to pitch, what to wear, playing the agent game, etc. As far as the creative process, Smith articulates his points and methods in an organized and concise manner. Above all, he gives insightful opinions on behind the scenes politics, which most producers will not do. And when I had a specific question, I sent an e-mail to Smith (his address is given in the back of the book) and he replied. To me that says it all--an outstanding book by a great author, teacher and person.

Useful but a misnomer
By Kami1019
The title Master Class is certainly a mis-classification at the very least. While there are some tutorials set with some of the contributor's examples there are just as many that are photographs without any explanation other than possible inspiration for the readers. If you're looking for inspiring photographs I would recommend Miss Aniela's Creative Portrait Photography. Want to improve your Photoshop skills? Check out any of Martin Evening's books. Overall a mildly useful book but there are better publications available.

Not Much of a Class
By Conrad J. Obregon
I have little doubt that the work of the illustrator Norman Rockwell will still be hanging on the walls of museums 100 years from now. I suspect that the works of surrealistic photographer Jerry Uelsmann will still be looked at in 100 years. I wonder if any of the works of the thirty artists featured in this book will survive that long.

Each section of the book features a short portfolio by a single artist, beginning with a small photograph of the artist and what appears to be a typical artist's statement. This is followed by another three pages featuring the works of the artist. Nine of the artists' portfolios are followed by tutorials explaining the Photoshop techniques used by the artist. The photographers' works range from image modifications designed to enhance the look of a photograph that, to the unwarned eye, appear to show no post-processing, to surrealistic visions, like a winged woman flying amidst snow covered peaks that can only be achieved by extensive post processing.

I have to confess that, while I admire the technical skills that create, say, a figure in a suit and formal shirt with the head of an alligator, I really don't find such images revealing the artist's vision in any way that communicates anything to me. On the other hand, an image like the suave young man in the white suit that has been altered to emphasize the relationship between the suit and the man's brown skin help to reveal something of the subject's attitude. Yet I am certain that there are people who will enjoy the sight of a dilapidated house floating in an ominous sky amidst birds.

Most of the artists' statements sounded a bit grandiose, except for Dean West, who only says that his work is evolving and that he uses photography to bring his visions to life. In a few instances artists must not have submitted acceptable statements so curator Perello has had to provide a brief biography instead.

The book says it is for beginner to intermediate. (I suppose the missing word is photographers.) But even the tutorials would require a good knowledge of the use of Photoshop to make sense, so that these portfolios can only serve as a source of inspiration or admiration for a beginner. Some of the tutorials will help intermediate Photoshop users, particularly the tutorials that are more reality based, but those users should keep in mind that often preliminary, intermediate, and finishing steps are not included in the tutorials.

For an idea of what it is possible to achieve in Photoshop, this book will be useful. It doesn't contain enough instruction to constitute any kind of master class.

Not a masterclass just a photo manipulation portfolio
By Gilberto Balderas Guadarrama
I expected some good tutorials, I guess I bought it for its cover, name and content misleading, just a bunch of photos and bios, nothing to learn if you are looking to master Adobe photoshop.
Buy it if you only want to see a portfolio (which you can do for free on the web)
I feel I just waste some bucks.

The Irony of Manifest Destiny: The Tragedy of America's Foreign Policy, by William Pfaff

"For years," William Pfaff writes, "there has been little or no critical reexamination of how and why the successful postwar American policy of 'patient but firm containment of Soviet expansionist tendencies...has over decades turned into a vast project for ending tyranny in the world. We defend this position by making the claim that the United States possesses an exceptional status among nations that confers upon it special international responsibilities, and exceptional privileges in meeting those responsibilities. This is where the problem lies. It has become somewhat of a national heresy to suggest the U .S. does not have a unique moral status and role to play in the history of nations and therefore in the affairs of the contemporary world. In fact it does not."
Cogently, thoughtfully, powerfully, Pfaff lays out the historical roots behind the American exceptionalism that animates our politics and foreign relations-and makes clear why it is flawed and must ultimately fail. Those roots lie in the secularization of western society brought about by the Enlightenment, and in America's effective separation from the common history of the west during the nineteenth and early parts of the twentieth century, during which it failed to gain "the indispensable experience Europeans have acquired of modern ideological folly and national tragedy." We are, thus, hubristic and naïve in our adventurism, and blind to the truth of the threats we face. No mere critic, Pfaff offers insightful observations on how we can and must adapt to Muslim extremism, nuclear competition, and other challenges of our time.

Review

“In an age of charlatans and poseurs, William Pfaff has long stood for realism and sobriety. With its penetrating critique of the secular utopianism that perverts American statecraft, The Irony of Manifest Destiny affirms his standing as our wisest critic of U.S. foreign policy.” ―Andrew J. Bacevich, author of The Limits of Power and Washington Rules: America's Path to Permanent War

“Eleanor Roosevelt once said that wishful thinking was America's ‘besetting sin.' In an era of seemingly permanent war, when the doctrine of American exceptionalism and the manifest destiny of the United States reigns virtually unchallenged in Washington, William Pfaff's lucid, dismayed commentary on the follies of such triumphalism has been an island of reason in the imperial sea. If his prescriptions, which hearken back to the America of foreign policy commonsense--that is, to George Kennan rather than George W. Bush, and, alas Barack Obama too--had been followed, the United States and the world would be in a far, far better situation. As things stand, though, Pfaff's clarity and rigor at least offer posterity a way of understanding what actually happened, and why, when national power and national blindness combined to lead the United States down the path of utopian nationalism and in the process become both a danger to the world and to itself.” ―David Rieff, author of At The Point of a Gun

“Anyone fortunate enough to have read the International Herald Tribune over the last several decades knows William Pfaff as the thoughtful and original American heir to George Kennan's sober Niebuhurian realism. Now, in his brilliant new essay on American foreign policy, Pfaff has applied his prudent realist vision to deconstructing the "tragedy" of America's global interventionism. In the name of what he calls "secular utopianism," Pfaff sees in America's increasingly imperialist foreign policy a residue of Enlightenment exceptionalism – America as a beacon of liberty and democracy's global "keeper." He shows persuasively why al Qaeda and Islamic fundamentalism are less perilous than we think, why our interventions in Iraq, Iran and Pakistan are successors to the futility of Vietnam, and why – despite his new spirit of multilateralism – President Obama is caught up in overseas policies likely to fail. This is a book by an American looking from the outside in that needs to be read by every political leader and thinker caught on the inside looking out – most of all by President Obama, who celebrates Niebuhr in theory but seems caught up in the insidious practices of Dick Cheney and George Bush, Jr.” ―Benjamin R. Barber, Distinguished Senior Fellow, Demos, author, Consumed and Jihad vs. McWorld

About the Author

William Pfaff is the author of 8 books on American foreign policy, international relations, and contemporary history. They include Barbarian Sentiments: America in the New Century, which was a finalist for the 1989 National Book Award, and which Ronald Steel called "a work of moral passion and striking insight by America's best foreign-affairs columnist." The late Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr. said "William Pfaff is Walter Lippmann's authentic heir. Like Lippmann, he places the rush of events in historical and cultural perspective and writes about them with lucidity and grace." For 25 years, Pfaff wrote a column for the International Herald Tribune, and his essays and articles have appeared widely, in the New York Review of Books, The New Yorker, Harper's, and Foreign Affairs. He lives in Paris.

A MASTERWORK OF WESTERN HISTORY, AMERICAN NATIONALISM & FOREIGN POLICY
By RBSProds
Five EXCELLENT Stars! A great intellectual feat of foreign policy scholarship and profound historical insight. There have been many excellent books on US foreign policy and imperialism in recent times, but this book is by far one of the most insightful, comprehensive, and important. Because of its historical breadth, it may be an invaluable asset to historians far into the future as they sort through the tangled web of past and current US policies and actions. This essay is an engrossing look by author, historian, army officer, and international relations expert William Pfaff at the political, psychological, religious, and foreign affairs implications and transformations that have occurred in Western civilization from the time of the French Revolution and our fledgling American Republic to today's "experience of extreme ideological violence." When the author talks war, he has insight from the time he was an Infantry/Special Forces officer in the Korea War. When he talks tough and speaks frankly, we know he was dismissed from a decades-old news column job for his correct, unyielding assessment of the run-up to the invasion of Iraq. What gives this book an extra dimension is author Pfaff's deep meditation on the shift from the overarching influence of religion on life and politics in earlier centuries to the birth of the Enlightenment's secular utopian approach, called a "terrible turn" of the two preceding centuries, which also changed the nature of warfare and the approach of governments & their citizens. This European shift has resonated forward in time across centuries, philosophical "isms", across nations, religions, to the United States of today: from its periods of isolation, wars, interventions, a 'bi-polar' cold war, and US emergence as the sole super-power in the wake of the USSR collapse (See Chapter VI on the influence of the Carter administration, preceding Reagan's own "tear down this wall" actions), endeavoring to spread democracy internationally. Aimed primarily at an American audience, Pfaff uses the term "manifest destiny" in a broader manner, far beyond USA westward continental expansionism and the shield of the Monroe Doctrine to a 21st Century meaning, as the United States continues its international power projection and unique imperialism to a point that has landed us in 2 simultaneous wars and a worldwide war against a new "elected enemy": jihad-based terrorism in general, and al-Qaeda specifically. These new conflicts have brought terror attacks to our very shores and to our highest profile institutions, as we fight and maintain hundreds of bases on distant fronts based on our unique national "myth" and presumed national purpose. The author excels at finding the root causes of actions and consequences that have confounded us both as a nation under various key presidential administrations and a member of the international community, time and time again. This is a book that should be read many times, especially the warning chapter at the very end. The footnotes alone are a treasury of facts and information. The words of Polybius, prefiguring George Santayana, reverberate across the landscape of this book: "The knowledge of past events is the sovereign corrective of human nature", indeed. My Highest Recommendation. Five EXCEPTIONAL Stars! (This review is based on a Kindle download in Mac, iPhone, and Kindle2 text-to-speech mode. William Pfaff is the author of The Bullet's Song: Romantic Violence and Utopia)

Something's Missing
By Tidewater
I'm and admirer of William Pfaff's writing, especially "The Bullet's Song," and this work is cetainly up to the high standards he has set in the past. It is good to read in a foreign policy tome that the Enlightenment was at best a mixed blessing, and the deleterious effects it has had on the ideas of the western "elites," and that (oh heresy!) there was a better balance when church and state (specifically, the Roman Catholic Church) were both recognized as having roles in moderating politics and the cultures (hence wars) of the western countries. One can almost hear the dim echoes of G. K. Chesterton's thoughts in this book.

I give the book four stars because of its omission of the key developments in U.S. foreign policy in the late 19th century that were spurred mainly by Henry Cabot lodge, Senator from Massachusetts, and a close coterie of supportive elders such as Henry Adams and John Hay, along with young bucks like Alfred Mahan and Theodore Roosevelt. Sen. Lodge gave a series of three speeches on the Senate floor in 1895 which pretty much encapsulate everything that Pfaff bemoans about the trajectory of U.S. foreign policy in the 20th and (so far) in the 21st centuries. A book I am now reading, "The Last Great Triumph," (Warren Zimmerman) details the lives of Lodge et al and their (hugely successful) efforts to reshape American foreign policy into an "expansionist" one. There's a wonderful photo of "The Great White Fleet" of U.S. battleships returning to Norfolk, VA, around 1910 after a round-the-world show of force, that says it all. (The Navy went to grey ships shortly thereafter.)

So while Pfaff spends a lot of time (too much in my opinion) on the perceived insidious effects of neo-conservatives on recent foreign adventures in the Middle East, IMHO his time would have been better spent dealing with the legacy of Lodge, Mahan, Roosevelt, et al, who actually turned the ship of state in an outward, aggressive direction that has been the nation's posture for the most part ever since. The Zimmerman book would make both a fine introduction and epilogue to Pfaff's work. The juxtaposition of the two make this reader feel that a national tragedy/comeuppance is the most likely outcome for this nation that's been on an evangelizing mission for well over 100 years.

Dense, but worth the effort
By Dienne
William Pfaff presents an erudite, albeit rather abstruse, account of how historical factors from the Enlightenment and the development of the American nation have coalesced into a pattern of American exceptionalism and imperialism which defines our worldview in matters related to foreign policy. According to Pfaff, such worldview has led to many misunderstandings and distortions of the threats faced by the modern American nation, from Communism during the Cold War to "Islamofascism" during the War on Terror.

Pfaff argues that Americans view themselves and their nation as somehow exceptional in the history of the world. We are the "best" nation because the ideals of our democracy serve as a beacon of light to other nations and as the solution to the world's problems. Americans believe that democratic capitalism is the most superior form of government and the natural ultimate end of the progression of history.

This belief in American governmental, economic and moral superiority was initially behind the idea of "Manifest Destiny" in the 1800s, when it was virtually accepted as inevitable that the United States would stretch from coast to coast and control the North American continent.

Pfaff, however, uses the term "Manifest Destiny" in a more expansive sense to mean America's self-designated role as the world's policeman and peace-keeping force. This more expansive role initially developed during the First World War after America was forced from its isolationism. It was strengthened by America's successful intervention in World War II, and cemented when the U.S. emerged from the Cold War as the only global superpower.

The U.S.'s perception of its role has gradually shifted through each of these phases from isolationism to a rather passive peace-keeping model of intervention, to an active model of intervention in which the U.S. has forcefully tried to implement its vision of democratic capitalism on a world-wide scale in an attempt which Pfaff argues (and I agree) is not only futile, but foolish, as the very attempt to control sovereign nations and impose American ideals provokes the very threats to U.S. power and security which such attempts are intended to prevent.

In light of these unintended consequences, Pfaff makes a plea for scaling back U.S. foreign policy and intervention in order to focus more specifically on maintaining and protecting American interests, without further expanding them into nations and cultures where neither democracy nor capitalism may be appropriate or desired by the indigenous people.

Pfaff packs a great deal of history, economics and international relations into a very dense 200 pages. This book is not light reading. I found it necessary to re-read certain sections several times before I could follow the thread of his argument. In one particular respect, however, despite repeatedly re-reading relevant sections, I never did fully understand his argument: how Enlightenment secularism somehow led to the current U.S. worldview.

According to Pfaff, during the Roman Catholic rule of the Middle Ages, there was a natural separation of church and state. The Church crowned the king or emperor to rule over secular affairs. That which belonged to Caesar was given to Caesar; that which was God's was given to God. Redemption for humankind wasn't possible on earth, only in Heaven. Hence, solutions to earthly problems would be worked out by God in the afterlife.

With the advent of the Enlightenment, however, Pfaff argues that with God being "dead", solutions to earthly problems were now the province of human reason and "secular utopias" were not only possible, but desirable on earth. This push for "secular utopia", according to Pfaff, dramatically changed the world political situation, and even the methods of making war in ways that have led to the current American global domination. American exceptionalism and the push to force worldwide Western-style democracy is just another manifestation of the "secular utopia" envisioned by the Enlightenment.

His argument leaves me rather baffled. Is he saying that there was no religious imperialism and exceptionalism? Roman Catholicism dominated the Western world much like America dominates the world today. Catholicism was forced onto unwilling and inappropriate recipients just as democracy and capitalism are today. And is he saying that war under Roman Catholicism was somehow less brutal or dehumanizing? Sure, it was on a rather smaller scale, but that has more to do with technological advances rather than changes in ideology - it's simply easier to kill people on a mass scale today. And is he saying that the world would somehow be better off had the Enlightenment not occurred? If we were still under the domination of Roman Catholicism? I guess I don't see that believing that human leaders know the mind of God and that they are implementing "God's will" is any better than humans trying to make things better by the force of reason.

Furthermore, I don't see anything "secular" about American exceptionalism. The original concept of "Manifest Destiny" was religious - it was the idea that "Providence" (i.e., God) gave America to the settlers as their "Promised Land". To this day, many Americans believe that America enjoys special divine favor (which we are ever in danger of losing if we continue our "immoral" ways) and many of our leaders continue to believe (or at least claim to believe) that they act under divine inspiration and guidance. George W. Bush didn't invade Iraq because he was seeking some kind of "secular" utopia. He invaded because that's what God told him to do. Frankly, I'd welcome a bit of "secular utopia".

But aside from that confusion/disagreement, I enjoyed the book. It was worth the struggle as it gave me new perspectives and new thoughts to mull over. Recommended, but only if you can really focus on it as you're reading.

Bach's Well-tempered Clavier: The 48 Preludes and Fugues, by David Ledbetter

Bach's 'Well-tempered Clavier' (the 48 Preludes and Fugues) stands at the core of baroque keyboard music and has been a model and inspiration for performers and composers ever since it was written. This invaluable guide to the 96 pieces explains Bach's various purposes in compiling the music, describes the rich traditions on which he drew and provides commentaries for each prelude and fugue. In his text, David Ledbetter addresses the focal points mentioned by Bach in his original 1722 title page. Drawing on Bach literature over the past three hundred years, he explores German traditions of composition types and Bach's instruments and innovations in keyboard technique in the general context of early eighteenth-century developments; reviews instructive and theoretical literature relating to keyboard temperaments from 1680 to 1750; and discusses Bach's pedagogical intent when composing 'Well-tempered Clavier'. Ledbetter's commentaries on individual preludes and fugues equip readers with the concepts necessary to make their own assessment and include information about the sources when details of notation, ornaments and fingerings have a bearing on performance. David Ledbetter studied music at the universities of Dublin and Oxford, and specialised in the harpsichord and early keyboard instruments at the Staatliche Hochschule fur Musik, Freiburg. He was Senior Lecturer at the Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester. Among his publications are 'Harpsichord and Lute Music in 17th-Century France' (1987) and 'Continuo Playing According to Handel' (1990).

By krisenda lobato
An enjoyable read that does require a decent amount of musical knowledge to fully appreciate (I wouldn't recommend it for anyone that lacks musical training). This book was helpful for better understanding the musical culture surrounding the creation of the Well Tempered Clavier. For instance, the book discusses previous works that attempted to use most, or all, the musical keys (and why), and relates various preludes and fugues of Bach's WTC to other fugues and works of other composers. The book discusses the various tuning systems in use at the time, and what Bach may have used (suggesting Bach favored a form of well-temperament at the time of WTC1, and perhaps equal temperament by WTC2). The book also discusses Bach's teaching program and pedagogical aims. The second half of the book gives an indepth look at each individual prelude and fugue - very useful for understanding the pieces and how one might attempt to realize them at the keyboard.

Purchased this as a gift for a Bachophile friend, who reports that is the best work on the subject of "the 48" and vastly informative and interesting. This is obviously a book for those who have some knowledge of musical theory, and know and play this work, to add to their delectation. Bach rules!

Loved it, couldn't put it down
By Shani
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. MM has a wonderful way of writing that keeps you from putting the book down. Though you can tell she is a first time writer, her imagination knows no bounds. It is also nice to read a young adult book that doesn't involve all fangs and fur.
I'll just say Atlantis. She does an amazing job of discribing this mythical place that makes you feel like your there. MM also throw's in other dimensions and other beings.Such an imagination.
The main character Emily is so relatable and endearing that as a reader you find yourself wanting to protect her but loving watching her grow in this new world she's thrown into.
This is a must read and if your smart you'll just go ahead and buy the second book in this series Band of Blackbirds....seriously the ending of this book will make you want to start reading BoB immediately.
