Not worth any price.

I'm sorry but this was just beyond frustrating. You invest in 4 books in a series over months if not years of publication dates and this is the ending that we get. This isn't "artsy" or whatever the author was going for, it was annoying and a waste of time.

Mild spoilers ahead:

If we wanted to see the story come full circle with the world ending up in actually a worse position than before we could have skipped 3.75 books and just said "hey, nothing you read actually matters".

A Book without and ending

I see the drive in the modern writer to write a story that is different. A story with something to make it stand out. But this... this is just a story without an end. Don't waste your time reading this well written, well imagined story because it's biggest failing is its ending and you will be as angry as I was. Drivel.

The ending negated a great series

I loved this series up until the last 50 pages. It wasn't just the plot twist, but the manner in which the twist turn key elements of the series into a gimmick. There was also a lack of resolution. Good over evil or not - it was disappointing not to have some epilogue to help us understand how the decision turns out.

One of the Best

This book is one of the best guides to handguns out today. As previously stated, it covers just about all the handgun makers, their offerings, and relevant information one could want. If a more updated version comes out, I fully intend to add it to my collection as well. The only real nit-picky things about this book are that it doesn't show photos of all the guns listed, and I'd have liked for some more detailing into "sub models" such as the Sig Sauer 226 Navy and Blackwater models but that is superficial when compared to the mostly empty content of the Jane's Gun Guide handgun section.

A Masterpiece You Can Use!

If you own a pistol or revolver, it's probably described in PISTOLS OF THE WORLD: A COMPREHENSIVE ILLUSTRATED ENCYCLOPEDIA OF THE WORLD'S PISTOLS AND REVOLVERS FROM 1870 TO THE PRESENT DAY by Ian V. Hogg and John Walter. This is truly a case of the subtitle telling all.

I tested it by looking for information on a couple of old Colts (a 1909 in .45 Colt) and an "Army Special Revolver" in .32-20 WCF. Both entries were concise, but accurate. The entry on the .32-20 even included the information that this revolver was built on the ".41 caliber frame", a fact not mentioned in A HISTORY OF THE COLT REVOLVER by Charles T. Haven and Frank A. Belden which runs over 700 pages.

Information on other handguns was just as good. My "Finnish Luger", actually a Parabellum M. 1908 supplied to Finland for its army was the subject of similarly concise, informative entry (on p. 100). These were converted by the Finns to 9 mm from 7.65 mm. The Finns also added a 4.7 inch long barrel from their Tikkakoski plant.

My 4th edition was published in 2004 and is one of the last, if not the last, publication by Ian V. Hogg, one of the world's foremost authorities on firearms. This edition was finished up by John Walter, an authority on Lugers and other handguns. Hogg passed away in March 2002 and PISTOLS OF THE WORLD is a fitting monument to a long and distinguished career.

This book is illustrated by black and white photographs and it is 432 pages long including an extensive bibliography and a very useful appendix entitled tthe "Pistol Data Bank" which abstracts the contents of the book for quick refence. The body of the book consists of entries in alphabetical order.

This book is authoritative and easy to use. If you are interested in the shooting sports or in collecting pistols and revolvers, you'll enjoy this book. Hollywood scriptwriters and other authors should also keep a copy of this book handy since most of them clearly have no idea what kind of pistol or revolver their protagonists should be carrying.

Disappointed

I am a fan of Ian Hogg. His "Military Small Arms of the 20th Century" is the definitive work in the field. This book, however, falls far short of that standard.
The text has none of Hogg's charm and lacks the details of development that provide insight into the weapons described. Additionally, the statistics we expect from Hogg are missing, leaving little more than catalog or manufacturer's PR brochure level material.
The illustrations are totally inadequate. for example, several photos of commercial Colt 1911 are included, though they are nearly identical. In contrast the Walther P99 and P22 have none.

The aim in writing up these lectures in book form has been to provide a unified, elementary and easily accessible account of the language of correlation functions or response functions, and to discuss particularly those simple techniques whose usefulness is not restricted to one specific system.

About the Author
Dieter Forster is a professor of physics at Temple University in Philadelphia. He was born in Southern Germany and received his “diplom” in physics at the University of Stuttgart in 1964, working under Hermann Haken. He then moved to Harvard University where he completed his Ph.D. in 1969 under Paul C. Martin. He has worked at Columbia University, the University of Chicago, and as a visiting professor, at the Technical University of Munich, the University of Stuttgart, and the National University of Mexico. He has taught physics courses on many levels but takes a special interest in conceptual level courses designed for students not entering the physics profession. His research has focused on the fluctuation theory of liquid structure and on phase transitions.

This is a wonderful book that I highly recommend to all since we all have problems with controlling what we say, and our words are like the rudder that steers the course of our lives. The book explains the spiritual connection of the tongue to the heart and how it defines our destiny, life with Christ, or death and a life lost. This is a short book that won't take long to read. The book was short and to the point. slightly insightful not comprehensive. The book could have better presented the topic of controlling the tongue. It brought up a few scriptures, but was not jam packed with powerful points that would change your life. A powerful scripture which God has given me great conviction for concerning controlling the tongue which is located in 1 Peter 4:11 "If anyone speaks, they should do so as one who speaks the very words of God" Be Blessed. The scripture mentioned in this book are very common, over used and minimal application. I gave the book 3 stars because it was not unnecessarily long, but it was somewhat redundant.

Created a battlefield scene with these soldiers

My 10 year old son is fascinated with Civil War history. I ordered these for him and he painstakingly cut them out and glued them together. His 77 year old granddad helped him build a plywood board base to place them on. They painted it like a battlefield with a river dividing the Union and Confederate sides. They then placed the 50 Union soldiers and 50 Confederate soldiers on either side along with cannons, flags, and tent camps. They also went out and collected rocks, moss and twigs to give it a realistic look. My son has it displayed in his bedroom and it looks awesome.

One note: the paper soldiers aren't perforated so you have to use scissors to cut each one out and they're fairly small. It would have been much nicer if the manufacturer had made them with perforation.

Best for manic civil war buffs

Very nice figures on good card stock. To accomplish a cut out you will need a steady hand,
a fine pair of scissors and/or an exacto-knife, time and a bit of passion. I don't see kids
doing this well, so only four stars. Quite a project for the price tho.

Not kids friendly.

This is 100 paper soldiers(and horses and a cannon and a tent) you have to cut out by hand. Its tedious and difficult, but rewarding if you have the patience to cut all the stuff out. Not sure kids would like it, but adult civil war buffs very much might.

Simple instructions and examples

What A Writer Needs does not contain any deep truths or startling revelations; it is at its core simply a book of fundamentals written as a reminder and an encouragement to creative writing teachers. Teachers can get into a rut in their instruction just as writers can feel trapped in their work, and author Ralph Fletcher does a fine job of helping both break out of the norm with solid examples from his own career and the writing of his students. There are no exercises for the reader to practice, simply instructions and examples to illustrate each chapter.

How many times have you looked at a photograph and wondered what the story was behind it? Photographs indicate relationships within and among people and nature. Photographs document one's perception of the world.

George Keane Henschler, or "Gee" as he likes to be called, and his granddaughter, Maggie, are the epicenter for all the stories in the book CLICK. The book starts off with a short story by Linda Sue Park. The authors that contributed to this book make up quite an impressive list: Deborah Ellis, Ruth Ozeki, Eoin Colfer, David Almond, Roddy Doyle, Nick Hornby, Margo Lanagan, and Gregory MacGuire

Parks gets the ball rolling, beginning with Gee's death and how it affects his granddaughter and his grandson, Jason. Maggie was terribly close to him and loved to hear his stories about his adventures as a photojournalist traveling the world. When he dies, he gives her a box with seven compartments holding shells with a note telling her to "throw it back." We learn that this serves as a map for her life's adventures. Jason, on the other hand, is a little bitter after finding out he is adopted and decides to reject his grandfather's gift of photographs and wants to sell them so he can look for his real father. He comes across a letter from Gee when he is about to steal something from him that basically changes his life. Gee knew that Jason had pilfered from him and now wants him to think about the people who love him and the road he is on and where it will lead.

The rest of the stories, all by different authors, take a part of the first story and do their own spin on it. One author chooses to write about how the box came into existence. Another author looks at the name "Keane" and writes a story connecting the family to an Irish Legacy. And still another author continues the story of Maggie - now Margaret- as she nears the end of her own life.

Each story, even though different than the one before, blends into each other almost seamlessly. Read by itself it might just be a bunch of nice short stories, but when all the stories are put together like so in this book it makes you realize that many relationships are circular in nature. Connections people make with random people they meet can have far-reaching effects.

CLICK, besides being interesting, is also benefiting Amnesty International. All royalties from the book will be donated to the group, which serves to protect people's human rights

Learning to See

By the time I was done with this book, I was more interested in the feeling it left me with than in the razzle-dazzle setup ("See 10 Authors--All Writing Together!") The question is, does Click work? And I really think it does. Click introduces you to some amazing characters, some individual stories that stick in your head, and a feeling that everyone on this huge, messy planet is somehow interrelated.

I'm a fantasy fan, and I did see a little magical realism here, but what I liked better was the way in which the reality of people's lives was illuminated, as if by a camera's flash, somehow made to seem magical without any need for wizards and spells. Click left me feeling wistful and just a little awed--again, by the people I met in the book rather than by the writing or the writers.

Yes, there's a framing device--a photographer named Gee dies and leaves his two grandchildren a mysterious legacy that leads them to still more mysteries about the man, let alone the world. And I could easily argue that some of the selections are better than others. But who cares? Step into this book and meet people like Annie Lumsden, who might be from the sea, or Jiro, whose brother Taro was crippled by a grenade. Get to know Vinnie ("V") and his prophesying grandma, as well as Lev, a young Russian prisoner who's made a very particular box. Discover Min, who inspires a boy named Jason to make breathtaking use of a huge pile of broken glass.

I'm glad that Amnesty International benefits from the sales of this book, but I'm even more glad that Click shows us something about this world that is dear to my own heart; that is, that each and every life on it, each individual set of worries and mistakes and dreams, each ordinary face--whether captured by a photographer or not--is a treasure beyond price.

Fascinating!

Another treasure from the past, this book, written by a medical doctor, was originally published in 1907. A virtual encyclopedia of precious and semi-precious stones and metals, this nearly 500-page book is loaded with lore and sprinkled liberally with anecdotes and historical information on how precious and semi-precious stones and metals were used in the past. There are many fascinating stories about the superstitions and legends that surrounded them; who owned what and how much; which diamonds were the biggest and how big they were, stories about kings, queens and potentates who owned them, how traditions surrounding precious and semi-precious stones came to be, and much more.

Although the book is encyclopedic, fortunately, it doesn't read like an encyclopedia. Dr. Fernie is a gifted writer whose engrossing style grabs and holds the reader's interest as he brings the history and lore of metals and precious stones to life. Of course there are sections for each stone and metal so you can go right to one you are interested in if you don't want to read the whole book.

In his introduction the good doctor states that the purpose of the book is to vindicate our forefathers' confidence in precious stones and metals for remedial uses either by scientific grounds or simple experience. Much of the information is anecdotal, and he freely admits that some if it is pure superstition, but not all. The metal copper is a notable exception as there is plenty of proof of its antiviral and antibacterial properties. It seems that whole villages near copper mines were infected with cholera, except for the miners. Doctors, noting this, began to experiment and found that by causing a person to wear a small copper plate over his/her stomach area, the seat of the disease, the person was protected from contracting cholera. This was proven again and again with soldiers and many others. He also adds other information about how copper was used to kill bacteria and viruses in water.

I did a little research on the Internet and found that in 2008 scientists had proven the ability of copper to kill bacteria and viruses and were doing research on uses for it, one possibility being use as touch plates in public places. There is nothing to indicate that anything was ever done. I am not good at reading scientific jargon, but my understanding from reading the report was that they tried to break it down into its components and found that wasn't possible. Sounds like they were looking for something to patent, and when they couldn't find it, they may have abandoned the project. Makes me wonder how many other useful and valuable substances have never been used for the benefit of the public because they couldn't be patented.
The table of contents is really a convenient index in the front of the book of where information on each stone and metal can be found. There is a general index in the back.

All in all very enjoyable to read and a valuable addition to my library.

Great delivery & prompt service

Great delivery & prompt service. This was a replacement for an old book that fell apart and was no longer useful. So you must know I like this book as it provides detailed facts on precious stones which I needed to learn about (since the 1950s). Highly recommend this book for those who want to get into the occult (secretive) powers and how to use such for better understanding of metaphysical properties of Mother Nature's cupboard.

Antiquarian Occult for the Mystic Jeweler

I actually owned this book years ago, lost it and found it here again on Amazon. This book is a must read for anyone who makes jewelry like I do. More than useless superstition it will give the essential information to use specific stones for specific purposes. Both spiritual and medicinal. It will make the difference between making a pretty, if expensive bauble and a priceless amulet or talisman. If you are not the least bit interested in anything spiritual or occult this book is not for you. If gemstones are just for decoration, this book is not for you. If the only medicine you take is chemicalized poison endorsed by the FDA, this book is not for you.
It was originally written in the early 1900's so some of the tone and syntax used might be a little trying to get through, it is well worth the effort.
