A wordless epic sea adventure

There is a legend that a Great Spotted Whale lives in the ocean, although a sighting fifty years ago was never corroborated. Now two young whale watchers each set out to find the whale, one armed with sound-recording equipment, the other with a camera. When their boats collide, they pool their resources to capture incontrovertible proof that the mythical whale exists. The eventual sighting is a magical moment, especially when the children discover that it was their own grandparents who first glimpsed the whale fifty years ago. The Murrows’ spectacular wordless adventure is brought to life with stunning graphite drawings that convey the drama and haunting beauty of the ocean and capture the majesty of the awe-inspiring whale.

From School Library Journal
Gr 1–4—A whale of a tale, beautifully rendered in nothing but pencil. "Giant Whale or Giant Hoax?" asks the Cape Chronicle, a local newspaper that contextualizes this otherwise wordless story. Fifty years ago, two children claimed to have seen a Giant Spotted Whale, but many didn't believe them. So now, a challenge to prove or disprove its existence has been issued. What ensues is the story of a modern girl and boy who set out individually with tracking and recording equipment, collide at sea, and then team up to achieve their goal. Every illustration showcases the capabilities of pencil; the artist uses a variety of techniques to create different types of textures, shadows, highlights, and dramatic effects. All together, these elements form a series of stunning, photorealistic snapshots. Minute details, such as those found on the young man's tattered coat, make it worth our while to examine each illustration closely. For its finale, the book comes full circle. A new edition of the Cape Chronicle reveals the connection between the past and present and leaves us with a sense of vindication. VERDICT A lovely addition.—Rachel Forbes, formerly of Oakville Public Library, Ontario, Canada

Review
These extraordinary black-and-white illustrations, etched with details, crosshatches, shadows, and shading, charge the children's expedition with a pulsing, breathless urgency. Their preternatural technical proficiencies and passion-fueled mission emerge somehow as entirely believable. More astounding is the artist's uncanny ability to reproduce the murky transparency of rippling ocean water, a whale submerged silently just beneath. Wordless, with masterful artwork and an intriguing narrative undertow, this whale's tale will transfix.
—Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

While the story may require some suspension of disbelief, the handsome illustrations show a great range of tonal quality and detail, as well as diverse design and perspectives. Those looking for clear-cut pictures of whales might be disappointed, but the artistically inclined will appreciate the interestingly crafted images.

The Murrows, a husband-and-wife team, debut with a sumptuously illustrated, semi-wordless story of discovery and collaboration as two children attempt to prove the existence of a local "Great Spotted Whale."...hard work, determination, and scientific pay off in a big way. Dynamically varied perspectives, the inky mysteries of the water's depths, and attention to realistic detail give the artwork a strong, visceral impact.
—Publishers Weekly Online

The book is a wordless picture book beginning or struggling readers may enjoy. It could also be used by a classroom teacher wanting to do a read-aloud without reading, just have students view the pictures. The dramatic, b&w pencil illustrations help tell the story. This would be a good book to purchase for public or school libraries.

And the best part is
By Amazon Customer
The whale, by Ethan and Vita Murrow is a story of adventure, passion, and inner strength. Who knew a picture book could deliver so much mystery and suspense that it forces you to sit on the edge of your seat throughout the entire book? But is this so special? Plenty of books make you do that... but in this book there are barely any words. Ethan and Vita Murrow are a husband and wife team. Vita is a videographer and Ethan an illustrator. What makes the production of the Whale so interesting is that it was inspired by a film Vita and Ethan were working on in 2007 called ‘Dust.’ Dust was a project focusing on environmental concerns and innovative solutions to protecting valuable resources. It took a number of creative minds and teamwork to make it happen, which thus inspired the children’s book the Whale. The whale is based on two kid inventors and born natural innovators that must work together to survive unpredictable dangers. Only friendship can lead them through the battles they will face. The book starts with a newspaper clipping, the only place you will see text in the book. It tells of a giant spotted whale seen over fifty years ago. Does this whale really exist or is it a hoax? The two kid inventors are determined to find out. Ethan and Vita lead us through the story with mind-blowing illustrations, all drawn in pencil. The amount of detail in the illustrations can leave you looking at one page for minutes, until moving on. However, the most exciting part of the story is feeling as if you are on the boat inside the adventure with these two kids. One minute you are floating gently up and down with the boat, and the next you are under the water swimming next to the biggest whale you have ever seen! Hold your breath... because this is one of the most suspenseful, exciting, and emotional picture books you will ever encounter. And the best part is, you interpret the pictures, you make the connections, and you become part of the story.

Amazing illustrations.
By John Rogers ClarkIV
Told in wonderful pencil drawings, without words, this book tells the story of a mythic spotted whale, last seen 50 years before. When two youngsters discover the old newspaper headline, they each decide to find the whale. Armed with tracking and recording gear, they collide at sea and must share one shakily repaired boat. They're successful in spotting the elusive whale and headlines recreate their repeat of the long ago discovery.
This is an excellent book for read-alouds, story times, or family gatherings (especially by the sea. The illustrations have so many intricate details that curious youngsters may well lose themselves after hearing the story described by an adult.
