Gr 6–9—This thorough encyclopedia of the Bigfoot legend offers hundreds of alphabetically arranged entries on all things Bigfoot, including specific legends from different locations, sightings stories, movies, theories, and related phenomena. Black-and-white images of storytellers and sites are featured throughout, and the book has a clean layout with sidebars. However, while the entries are well ordered and clear, there is no set structure in terms of naming or topic division. Entries on films, for instance, are named for the given movie, while other sections are named for the location where a sighting was reported. Other entries are items of interest (such as "Dogs and Bigfoot"), but there is no way to categorize these subjects and separate them out. In addition, the point of view of the encyclopedia lacks consistency: some entries are written in an academic style (though with no citations), while others read like personal stories (some even suggesting that Bigfoot is not only real, but also a danger to the general public). Informative Overview of Bigfoot Lore

A excellent, encyclopedic collection of information about Bigfoot and his relatives, certain to be informative to all but the most knowledgeable. There are, of course, the expected accounts about Jacko, the yeti, the links to proto-humans, UFOs and Bigfoot, and the Russian almasty captured in WWII. However, there are also aspects I was not as familiar with including numerous reports of Bigfoot shot at but showing no signs of being hit, reports linking Bigfoot with maintaining shelter in cave systems, and apparent Bigfoot shelters found in the woods (something Les Stroud, Survivorman, discussed in his Bigfoot-hunting TV special). The encyclopedic format and liberal use of photos aids readability, and provides a broad overview of the topic. Makes me want to go hunting for Bigfoot in the nearby Shawnee National Forest of Southern Illinois, a Bigfoot hangout I've been told (farmers frequently report seeing them walking across their fields near the distant treeline frequently). Highly recommended.

Although controversial, this is undoubtably an intriguing topic. I thought I'd heard about everything related to Sasquatch but Redfern expands the genre to include description of a variety of similar hominid sightings. Many of these I had never heard of, including the Almasty of Russia, Batutut of Borneo, and Yowie of Australia. I especially appreciated the encyclopedic nature of the book as it can be used to quickly, alphabetically locate information. I also liked the matter-of-fact writing style of Redfern. I can recommend this book.

Recommended and exhaustive compendium which is not afraid to court controversy!

Nick Redfern has taken a great volume of information and put it together into a compendium that is fairly complete. The author gives brief overviews not only of American reports, but gives a truly international feel by showcasing reports out of South America, Australia, Asia, Europe and even his home country of England, a lot of which I was unaware of and most likely was written about in Nick's other Bigfoot books focusing on Anomalous Primates of the British Isles. I do have to caution though, that the author is not prone to shy away from the more fantastical elements reported by some witnesses, such as the alleged connection to UFOs, strange disappearances by these creatures, hominids which seem to be impervious to gunfire and cases where the creatures seemed to be not entirely substantial but are described in terms of a witness attempting to hit the creature, but the object used goes right through the creature(!) Whether you agree with or believe those more fantastical elements or not is irrelevant because the author has included those bits of controversy into this excellent volume with no prejudice or editing. I truly enjoyed this book, and do recommend it to those who may not know a great deal about this subject or for that person (like me) who just loves to read about these mystery creatures. I give this one a solid 9 stars. Excellent all the way around!

In addition to his extensive background in technology education, Dr. Kubala's career includes industrial experience with responsibilities in the fields of aerodynamics and electrical drafting, design, testing, and evaluation.

The book was good except that pictures and diagrams don't always match up with the page that you are on. For example a diagram would be on page four or five and the written text would be on page three. This sometimes makes the problems hard to solve. That is why I am giving it four stars instead of five.

Decent start of a book in need of an editor.

This book is a decent start. It gives a summary of the energy saving opportunities in various industries. However, there are a lot of "rules of thumb" in need of justification and citation. Also, the formatting is very poor. It looks as though it was formatted at home in Microsoft Word and sent directly to the press. Equations are not even typeset. Beautiful and inspiring book

The Essence of Watercolour contains very beautiful and inspiring paintings.

I like her suggestive style, which is to draw just enough and let the mind fill in the rest. Her use of wet on wet for blending colours is masterful and the pastel colours used are a joy to look at. It reminds me of the feeling you get when you watch a beautiful sunset.

Accompanying the paintings are brief but insightful instructions that are easy to try. There are lessons on transparency, layering, experimenting with colours, understanding brushstrokes and other watercolour techniques. Even though the watercolour tips are not unique to this book, it's always interesting to read it from the perspective of different artists.

Highly recommended to watercolour lovers.

This used book was delivered in very short order. I was anxious to get this book as it was shown to me in class and some of the lessons I needed were detailed in word and pictures. I refer to this book nearly every day. The photos are astounding and the words very clear. A valuable learning tool.

What a beautiful and surprisng book! Hazel Soan's book is just wonderful to look at. I am still working through her Explore pages, in which she gives little projects to work on the chapter subjects: transparancy, wet-on-wet, etc., but the book is excellent just for the the examples of the author's works, which are terrific! I love the mixture of London street scenes with African wildlife (elephants, warthogs, sleeping lions), or with quiet gardens in Italy. A great body of work.

I took this book to my watercolor class and showed it to my fellow students and the instructor, who were equally enthusiastic as I was. Hopefully, as I work through the exercises, I will come to love this book even more than I do already!

Lear certainly fits the reader profile of the magazine that bears her name: "the woman who wasn't born yesterday." Her life, recounted here, is jam packed with disastrous experience: abandonment at birth; adoption by an unmaternal woman and a man who soon after committed suicide; sexual abuse by a stepfather; and her own depression bouts (one leading to the Bellevue psych ward) intermingled with three marriages and forays into lesbianism. While Lear's first-person take on these events has its own peculiar power, it also has surprising and enormous gaps. There is little on Norman Lear, her most famous husband, or the magazine she launched from that divorce money. Still, while readers may expect other things from this autobiography, it will probably have curiosity value for fans of the magazine and could serve as a recovery book of sorts for those suffering from sexual abuse/depression. The founder of Lear's magazine and ex-wife of producer Norman Lear tells all and then some in a disturbing memoir that is searingly frank--though infuriatingly sketchy on biographical detail. Born in 1923 to an unmarried teenage mother in Hudson, N.Y., Lear was adopted by Herb and Aline Loeb. Aline was vain and deeply self-absorbed; Herb killed himself when Lear was ten. Sent as a teenager to a psychiatrist, Lear described how her new stepfather had been sexually abusing her for years. The psychiatrist told her mother and stepfather, her mother sided with the abuser, and Lear left home for good. Two failed marriages, retailing jobs in N.Y.C., and a succession of men followed. In 1956, at age 34, Lear moved to L.A. and married Norman Lear. As a character, the famed TV producer is almost completely absent here, although an abstract meditation on infidelity in Hollywood reads as a veiled reference to an unhappy marriage. Frances Lear went on to raise two daughters, divorce, and begin her magazine--all while battling manic- depressive illness. No subject is taboo here: Lear describes lesbian affairs, a stint in a mental institution, sex with her therapist, a dependence on marijuana, and difficult and needy relationships with men. Her deepest probings are of the depressive cycles of her illness and her suicidal urges. But while her full- tilt pursuit of the uncomfortable, the painful, and the unsavory may be admirable, Lear's eschewal of chronology, context, or any acknowledgement of her obviously considerable strengths detracts from her memoir's accessibility. Growing Up Pains....

I hadn't read an entire book in quiet some time/Many Years,lol & I Never heard of this book or the author but I began reading it and I was "Hooked",it speaks of adoption,a mothers lack of Love,molestation,sex,bad relationships,lust,ect.and I enjoyed her life journey that many of us can relate too.For the small cost of this book I think it's worth it,the chapters are short & went bye fast enough to make the book go quickly too.
Sometimes we need to hear that we are Not the only ones who were hurt as children..

Lear led a harrowing life that would have undone many of lesser mettle. I found her insights powerful on the effect unloving mothers and fathers have on their children and the subsequent victimization of those children by others (and their own selves). It deals with rough topics but the journey is worthwhile.

Outstanding book, but you should buy the newer edition, not this version

All of the reviews on this book are generally consistent in their praise for the book and the authors. I do not have any points to add to the discussion other than this:

It is a credit to this version of Statistics for Experimenters that it has remained relevant throughout the years as a classic introductory text that has kept selling consistently since it was released in the 1970's. Nevertheless, unless you have a particular reason for purchasing this version, you should purchase the updated version(also available through Amazon).

The full title of the newer edition is:

Statistics for Experimenters: Design, Innovation, and Discovery, 2nd Edition

The 2nd edition, written in the same engaging and readable style as the 1st, contains virtually all of the content of the 1st edition plus advances in design of experiments that have happened since the 1st edition was published.

Immediate usability in practice.

This is an excellently written book with clear examples of how to apply statistics to everyday experimental settings. Box delves deep enough into the underlying theory to give an engineer such as myself an appreciation for the "reality" of the mathematics, but sticks to concrete examples and putting theory into practice. Each chapter follows the previous one, but each is also reasonably self-contained. Terminology is easily clarified with a quick use of the comprehensive index.
Additionally, don't let the print date fool you... the book is timely.

classic text on design, well presented

This book was published in 1978 but as other reviewers have noted its practical methods and advice are timeless. George Box and Stu Hunter are both very famous statisticians who are also great teachers and lecturers. Bill Hunter is now deceased. All three authors have made major contributions to the design of experiments. The book is written for practitioners and in the simplest language possible. Emphasis is placed on practical designs and not optimal designs because optimal designs are very sensitive to model specification.
It does not include the robust designs of Taguchi which came later and could easily be included if the authors choose to revise it.

The most effective sales system....ever

I have been in sales for 25 years, the last 15 in insurance with the same commpany. About 2 years ago (2007), I finally reached a near-burnout. Actually, looking back, I have to admit that I WAS burnt out.

I desparately wanted out of sales. I was tired of prospects wanting to 'think about it', tired of giving quotes/presentations only to have them use it to get their current carrier to lower their rates, tired of feeling subservient to some prospects and client, tired of educating prospects and NOT getting the sale, tired of chasing prospects down, tired of getting beat up on price, and tired of their lies and games. I used to spend hours making up a great educational and consultative presentation thinking they'll really be impressed, only to hear "Wow, what a wonderful presentation. You did a great job and we really appreciate all the information. You're a great salesman and have been very helpful, but we decided to stay where we're at". Or I might hear something like "Great job, but you're competition is $100 cheaper"

An associate of mine who was experiencing the same frustrations learned about the Sandler Sales system, and turned me on to it. I don't mean to sound like a commercial, but it totally saved my [business] life. Because of it, my sales are up, my burnout is gone, and I enjoy sales again.

Sandler's system is a complete reversal of traditional selling methods. I no longer 'sell', rather the prospect buys. No more do I give away all my information or make such long presentations 'for free'. There is no pressure, no 'handling objections', and no think-it-overs. I know that sounds wierd, but it is by far the most ingenious selling system I've seen. I will never, ever go back to those traditional selling methods that led me to burn out.

The book 'Sandler Rules' highlights all of the principles taught in the Sandler system. It's an easy and enjoyable read, concise, practical, and will be the best money you ever spend on any kind of sales book!

This is a rehash of Frank Bettger's book.

I read this book, and thought it was ok. Some of the tactics I didn't believe I could pull off myself, without coming off as obnoxious. So, I kept searching for other books on improving my selling techniques. Then I found a book written in 1947 by Frank Bettger called "How I Raised Myself from Failure to Success in Selling." I read it and noticed that nearly everything Sandler was teaching in the 90's was exactly what Bettger said in the 40s.

This book is a complete rehash of Bettger's book. Except, Bettger's book comes off less aggressive and more "I just want to help." The questions Bettger suggests you ask the prospect seemed fair and inquisitive in a friendly manner, this book (I won't attribute it to Sandler b/c I know someone wrote it after he passed away) suggested you ask the prospect questions as well, but their examples came off more as badgering, almost like a police officer interrogating a suspect.

Having read both books, I'd suggest you only read Bettger's book. His tone might be a little fatherly, but while essentially the same theories and ideas, his way is less likely for you to come off as a jerk.

Contains good knowledge but the Kindle version is sloppy

I am not a salesperson so I did find book useful and it certainly put sales into a new perspective. For me now, sales is about finding out just what the prospect needs and then presenting your product/service in light of those needs. If your product/service does not meet the needs of the customer then move on as quickly as possible. Be polite of course, but you help yourself and the prospect by moving on as soon as you determine that the fit is inappropriate. Of course there is a lot more here: understanding where a sale occurs in the psyche, avoiding traps, giving the customer every chance to back out before you close instead of closing your eyes and hoping the deal goes through. I am trained in NLP so I found the examples to be adequate and quite useful.

The Kindle version however was not proofread. There is no table of contents, sentences break at odd points. This is a matter of properly formatting the kindle version and does require a bit of effort. Taking a doc file and just loading it up to Kindle results in these errors and is just sloppy on the part of the publisher. The information in the book is good, but the execution is sloppy.

In Deliberate Soccer Practice: 50 Defending Football Exercises to Improve Decision-Making, Ray Power provides an excellent introduction that sets the stage for his approach and the topic. The deliberate practice method takes modern coaching principles of engaging players mentally and physically in real game situations. Each exercise clearly declares the purpose, set-up, instructions, and progressions to increase the challenge for payers. Best of all, however, are the list of challenges and questions included for use with players. Using questions demands players be switched-on and called into the decision-making process, helping them find their own creative solutions to game-related problems while maximizing the quality of training time. All the exercises in this title begin with these real game situations from the individual to full side, including position-specific details. There are even specific scenario practices. I have read a lot of coaching title and this is excellent value for the price -- no glossy, color images just insight and knowledge about coaching the game.
