Great insight behind the labors and love about filming the greatest film of Christ

Franco Zeferelli's Jesus a spiritual diary" is a great companion to his masterpiece Jesus of Nazareth. Zeferreli describes the labor of finding the locations, the proper screenplay and most important of all the actor who would portray the son of God. From his various trips to the middle east, meetings with the Pope, and his sureal screen test on Robert Powell which astonished everyone and led to his casting as Jesus. The book includes photos and artwork by Zeferrelli himself during the filming of the miniseries. One of the most memoral moments in his diary is his explanation of how the resurrection scene was meant to be filmed entirely different from the final outcome and how a sandstorm and others natural disasters interupted filming the scene several times during a course of a couple of days until the final decision was made and the result is what is now in the timeless classic. Highly recomended.

Wonderful Behind-the-Scenes Information

The book illuminates the creative process behind the film. The chapter on how Robert Powell was cast as Jesus is worth the price alone. Fans of the film, film students, and anyone interested in how religion is conveyed through mass media may find value in this book. Zeffirelli is one of the great directors, and this peek into his creative process, written by him, is engaging and insightful. Watch the film first, read the book, then watch the film again.

An Undiscovered Treasure to Supplement TV's Greatest Miniseries

I was thrilled to find this unheralded little book featuring director Franco Zeffirelli's diary entries during filming of his beautiful and reverent mini-series for television, "Jesus of Nazareth" (British-Italian; 1977). I enjoyed reading this talented man's personal recollections on and off the set during production.
