Twenty Couterparts - An Absolute Gem for Trombone

Tom Ervin's book "Twenty Counterparts" (Book One) contains a series of duet accompaniments to the Bodogni-Rochut "Melodious Etudes for Trombone" numbers 1-20. Any trombone teacher or student should already be very familiar with the Joannes Rochut editions of the Bordogni vocalises. They are the "industry standard" used for teaching, developing, and maintaining a beautiful and lyrical approach to the trombone (an instrument which, despite its reputation, can very closely imitate a singer's voice). This book adds a fresh and well-needed spice in that recipe. Tom Ervin spent years in his trombone studio at the University of Arizona improvising counterparts to the Rochut etudes on the spot with each student (something we all found both inspirational and a bit intimidating as we struggled with simply mastering the written part). Putting 20 of those counterparts in print for the rest of us to utilize was one of the best ideas I can think of and it provided a wonderful resource for teachers, students, and professionals. The etudes are laid out identically to the Rochut source material with regards to page numbers and measures per line so, if one person gets lost, it's very easy to pick up and choose a place to restart. The accompaniments are, at times, either more or less difficult than the original etudes and they frequently head into harmonic areas which are both surprising and refreshing. The counterparts book can be used for recreational or educational duet playing and can also be used independently as solo etudes because of the high quality of the material.

An excellent addition for teachers or advanced students

Twenty counterparts not only add harmony to Melodious Etudes, they also are challenging to play in their own right. They go beyond a simplistic approach to highlight the musical value of the etudes, which in itself brings additional value to lessons. They can also be used by two students to vary their practice routine.

Great book. Me and my professor use this book in our applied lessons, it's just so great. There's a couple of very minor misprints throughout; number your bars and they'll be easy to spot.
