Do Tell!: Stories by Atheists and Agnostics in AA, by Roger C.

This book contains thirty stories – an equal number by women and men – by atheists and agnostics who tell us “what it was like, what happened and what it’s like now” as they made their way to a life of long-term sobriety within the rooms of Alcoholics Anonymous. Storytelling is the essence of AA. It is in sharing our “experience, strength and hope” in recovery that we are able to help others within our Fellowship. The diversity and richness of the stories contained in Do Tell! will no doubt be an inspiration and provide important support to nonbelievers within the often overly-religious fellowship of Alcoholics Anonymous.

Alcoholics Recover Without God
By Neil F
This book fills what was a major gap in AA Recovery Literature.

Over the years, there have been an abundance of stories documenting the recovery of believers but the stories of recovering atheists, agnostics and free thinkers has, for the most part been ignored. Even worse, many such prospects have approached AA over the years and left discouraged when they were told their only hope for recovery was through acceptance of a god. Many may have died before finding like minded role models.

"Do Tell" sets the record straight. Since the earliest days of AA, atheists and agnostics have recovered in AA without ever coming to believe in a god. "Do Tell" relates the personnal stories of 30 current members of AA who identify as atheist or agnostic. This is a small sample of the many who, over the years, have not relied on a god for their sobriety.

If you have a problem with alcohol or for that matter any other addiction, do not be discouraged by the fact that some will claim you must find god to recover. The facts speak clearly through the stories in "Do Tell."

I highly recommend this book.

Best little recovery book yet
By Life Jensen
Now aaagnostica has published a number of good books, including Don't Tell, where everyone agnostic, atheist, freethinker, or other kind of unbeliever had opportunity to voice their frustrations with both mainstream AA and the more fundamentalist kinds of meetings. Some of the essays were a bit hard to get through, but it was still the best book of its kind at the time. In the new stories in DO TELL everyone has moved beyond the frustrations, and focused on the positive aspects of recovery. Hey, the average sobriety time in this book is probably 20 years, so of course there is positive aspects of recovery! We just had to process our frustrations first. But now it is like we're moving toward the light rather than fleeing from the darkness, and this little book is absolutely great. We unbelievers are every bit as happy, joyous and free as the religious folks in AA, and I hope the latter can have enough openmindedness to read this book. I can sort of understand how regular AAs don't want to hear us unbelievers complain about the religiosity in AA any more than we want to sit through that religiosity, but here we're beyond that. Here we're simply talking good recovery, And of course, showing that it is entirely possible to have good recovery without any higher power. Whether the more religiously oriented folks in AA get something special out of their higher power stuffr is not for me to judge, but one thing is clear: We unbelievers definitely are gaining strength and hope from sharing our experience with each other in this great little book. Preaching for the choir is good, but this book really deserves to be common reading among all AAs.
And while we're at it, I would like to plug another book of recovery stories which deserves to be common reading in AA. This one is about native americans, called Wounded Warriors: A Time for Healing (Doyle Arbogast). Another amazing book. The stories in the AA Big Book are somewhat sanitized just to make sure they don't offend anyone. These two books are straight from the heart.
Now go out and DO TELL!

If you’re an atheist or agnostic in AA, this book will help you feel connected to and part of Alcoholics Anonymous.
By John S.
This is an important book because in Alcoholics Anonymous our stories are important. In telling them, we are reminded of who we are and where we’ve been, and in hearing the stories of others we forge the bonds upon which our sobriety is built.

In the forward, Marya Hornbacher writes, “These stories show us that the language of the Steps is not enough to keep us out if we want in. Underneath the black and white of the print on the page, the principles exist – dynamic, subject to interpretation, always in flux, and not listed anywhere in the traditional literature, so far as I can find”.

If you’re an atheist or agnostic in AA, this book will help you feel connected to and part of Alcoholics Anonymous. You will find your story within the stories contained in this book.
